Story:
Shane's story starts with his love for fighting. He was a very determined fighter and took it very serious with the a goal of going pro with a strong record of 8-3. His last MMA fight would be in May 2016, just short of going pro. At that time we didn't know that he would start fighting a different kind of fight, and his first round started April 2017; when Shane was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma (Bone cancer) in his pelvis. Shane saw one of the world’s top Sarcoma specialists in Denver, CO. That was when the Doctor us told this type of cancer doesn't usually show up in people Shane's age, the doctor then told us that it was almost unheard of that this type of cancer showed up in his pelvis. Even with the odds not being in Shane's favor he refused to let Cancer define him. His ultimate goal was to get better so he could get back in the cage. Shane's had treatment in Denver every other week. A couple months later the cost of driving to Denver started to weigh on us, and he requested that his treatments be moved to Billings Clinic. Once he was transferred there he started a two week cycle of radiation along with his continued chemo cycles. Not long after that we found out that Shane was in remission!! He stopped treatments and was able to return to work. Once he started to build strength back up at work he decided that it was to get back in the gym and working out again. Shane did his best to stay healthy and make sure the cancer stayed gone! The following summer we moved to Kennesaw, GA. That's when Shane fire for fighting was sparked again. Shane was able to join an MMA gym, and you could see that the world was coming back together for him. He trained almost daily and was feeling on top of the world again. Unfortunately our place of work had closed down and we had to make the tough choice to move back to Wyoming quickly. Once we were back we got settled into our new jobs and found the perfect house to rent. Everything was starting to look up again Shane was staying healthy and started lifting weights with family and friends in a local gym. Early January Shane's right eye had begun to give him some trouble. His eye would get red and puffy, the local doctor treated him with some antibiotics that seem to help. Shane went through some intense head aches and blurred vision. We decided that it was time he see an eye doctor. Shane went in with the hopes of only having something stuck behind his eye, but when the doctor couldn't find anything he order a CT Scan. A couple days later on Feb 14th, 2019 Shane received a call from the eye doctor requesting that he go to ER because they had found a mass. Once at the ER they confirmed the mass behind Shane's eye along with another larger mass at the back of his skull. At this point the Riverton Hospital had become concerned about Shane's optic nerve and saving his eye sight, they had him flown to the Billings Clinic. The next morning Shane had a team of doctors that not only confirmed that Shane's Sarcoma was back, but he had a total of 4 tumors in his skull. Two of them were very large. They worried about keeping his eyesight intact, but they were also concerned about the large one in the back of his skull that was putting pressures on his brain. The two smaller tumors at the top of his skull and under his left eye didn't concern the doctors. From there Shane asked to be transferred back to UCHealth in Denver to talk to the Sarcoma Specialist about a game plan. Once we were back in Denver the fight with our insurance had started. The hospital started Shane on chemo and kept him for over a week. Insurance wasn't going to approve Shane's treatment while we were there. Insurance had determined that the treatment they were giving Shane was not necessary for him, along with the medication that he would need to keep his blood counts from dropping too low. Finally after a several day long fight with insurance they agreed to cover Shane's treatment for the one time in Denver and he was released to go back home to Riverton. There he was referred to a Doctor in Casper to continue Chemo. This would be yet another long battle with insurance to get chemo approved. The Doctor is Casper decided that they could no longer wait it out and scheduled Shane for radiation to try and release some of the pressure off Shane's optic nerve and brain. It was at this time that Shane learned he would not be able to fight in a cage again, and this dream of being a Pro MMA fighter stopped there. What is amazing about Shane is that even though he had lost that dream he wouldn't let that get him down, he quickly replaced that goal with another. Once he beats cancer AGAIN he is going to focus on lifting weights and building his body! Almost a month had passed by and insurance had FINALLY approved the treatment plan for chemo. Radiation has seemed to shrink the size of the tumor behind Shane's eye and the one on the back of his head. At this time we thought things were moving along in the right direction. Some time had passed and we started to notice that Shane was developing a very large lump on the top of his skull. We had brought this to his new doctors attention and she confirmed that chemo was not working and the tumor that wasn't visible before had become a large goose egg within a few weeks. Not only that, she also confirmed with a CT scan that his original tumor site in his pelvic area had begun to grow again. Since we knew that there was going to be another wait for a new chemo treatment to be approved, his doctor sent him in for another round of radiation, but at the top of his skull this time. We were then told that they wouldn't be able to radiate his hip since it had already received radiation once before. After completing radiation and starting new treatment the doctor confirmed that this was the last treatment option for Shane, she had no hope that this Chemo would be any more effective than the last and surgery was not an option. After hearing this news Shane wasn’t going down without a fight. He started the trial knowing that the probability of it working was low, and decided it was time to reach out to other doctors about surgery. Shane went to Jackson, WY to have an orthopedic surgeon look at his hip and see if they could safely remove the tumor. The Doctor in Jackson said he was not comfortable with this type of od surgery and sent him to Huntsman Cancer Clinic in Utah. Shane then had a 16 hour long surgery in February 2020 to remove the large tumor in his left pelvis. The surgery removed the whole back wing along with several muscles and nerves. We then stayed in Utah for about two weeks. When we returned home healing was going great, Until one morning Shane woke up and the left side of his face was numb. He was flown back to Utah and was told that the four tumors in his head had started growing again. We stayed there another few weeks while they did radiation on his skull again. Things were starting to look up and we were feeling like things may be getting better. Shane was struggling with walking, but was feeling better in the pelvis area. His back had started to give him trouble and we thought that may that was from missing muscles and getting used to walking again without all the parts. In May 2020 he had a follow up PET scan to make sure that cancer was being contained. The PET scan showed that Shane has a large tumor on his left pelvis now along with 2 new tumors on his spine. They wanted an MRI to prove the tumors were there. In June 2020 Shane had the MRI and it confirmed the 3 tumors along with some new growth on the right pelvis where he had just had surgery. Shane has one more trial option and has started that Aug 2020. July 2020 He was told that there are several tumors on his spine, lungs and throughout his skull and pelvis. Shane’s body is no longer making hemoglobin so he needs a blood transfusion 1-2 times a month now. Our current insurance doesn’t cover medications so we pay for them out of pocket. Any donations that are made to Shane, will go towards paying for medications, medical bills, normal bills, travel costs and day to day help. Shane’s wife was let go from her job in May, because she needed back surgery. She has decided that it was in Shane’s best interest to stay home with him to help with everyday tasks. Even with all of this going on Shane and Dayna have taken in their niece.
