Most of you know that my sister, Shannon, works as a public defender in the Bronx. She works alongside an organization called The Bronx Freedom Fund, which is an awesome non-profit organization that pays bail for poor people accused of misdemeanor crimes. Since they began in 2012, the Freedom Fund has bailed out 1,195 people. Of those people, 95% returned to all their court dates, and 52% of their cases resulted in a full dismissal. You heard that right: over half of the cases were dismissed! Another whopping 40% of the cases ended with a non-criminal result (like a traffic ticket). But for the Bronx Freedom Fund, these same people would have spent days, weeks, or even months in jail. The reality is that 92% of people who cannot make bail end up pleading guilty to a misdemeanor just to get out. Gross, right?
