Shamattawa COVID-19 Relief Fund
Shamattawa First Nation is an isolated Northern Cree Nation located
approximately 356 kilometers northeast of Thompson and 750 kilometers northeast of Winnipeg. Shamattawa has an approximate 1,300 First Nation residents.
It is estimated that half of that population number are children and youth.
Shamattawa First Nation is experiencing a severe outbreak of the COVID-19 with over 300 positive cases registered to date. Shamattawa First Nation's
pre-covid are third world living conditions, which include a lack of clean drinking water, overcrowding due to a severe housing shortage, food insecurity, high rates of communicable diseases, shortages in medical and mental health services and
other essential services, all of which has greatly contributed to the rapid spread
of the Covid-19 virus within the community.
The combination of economic and social infastructure and accessibility of good
and services challenges and high costs of living associated with living in a remote geographical area, has been greatly exasperated by the covid outbreak crisis,
which has resulted in large families isolating in their homes and further reducing
their ability to access needed resources, leaving children, youth, elders and their
family's within the community to suffer the worst of economic, social, health and mental health outcomes associated with the covid pandemic.
In response to the need within the community of Shamattawa the Jordan's
Principle Initiative in Shamattawa is asking for monetary donations to assist with purchasing food, diapers and formula, toys, colouring and crafting materials for
children, youth and their families. These funds are urgently needed.
The community of Shamattawa can also use donations of non-perishable food
items, diapers, formula, toys, colouring and crafting materials, new and lightly
used clothing, winter clothing and boots, candies, books, traditional medicines,
etc.
For those wishing to donate of physical items please contact Janet with Nirvana Waterworks, at (204) [phone redacted] to make arrangements for safe drop off to the
donation site.
