On November 2nd around 4:00 am, a tree fell through my daughter Shalom’s house. Just earlier that day she completed finishing touches on her home after 20 months of hard work. She fell asleep in her small 2nd floor loft but was later thrust to the ground in a heap of rubble. In one fell swoop the house was destroyed and Shalom’s leg was clearly broken. If not for her incredible determination and resiliency, I strongly believe that she would have died in the rubble. In spite of being lodged in a tiny space, she painstakingly maneuvered herself down to an open space held up by her bathtub. She then inched her way to her van where she honked on the horn hoping to be heard by someone in her very remote mountain community where neighbors live miles apart. She honked while her dog barked for hours before help came around 6 AM. Shalom has always been the most resourceful, determined and hard working person I know. I am so deeply grateful for these qualities in her, for her neighbor who aided her and for the angels who saved the tiny spot she navigated through while everything else was crushed.
Shalom’s California home was uninsurable. She lived off grid using solar power, spring water and the wood on her land for heat. Her garden and fruit trees provided for her. She chose this lifestyle for the sustainability it offered as she is funded by a very limited fixed disability income.
Today, I am asking all of you who have loved someone deeply to help us rebuild Shalom and Jade’s mountain sanctuary. In the year and 8 months they have lived there they have worked tirelessly and diligently to build their life in their remote paradise. Once Shalom rehabilitates I do not have a single doubt she will steadfastly begin again. I deeply appreciate all of you for your help and support. Susan Kay, (Mom and Grandma)
