Shaina's Medical Journey

Donation protected
Dear all, Welcome to  "Shaina's Medical Journey".   Funds in this campaign have helped Shaina and her family off-set expenses related to Shaina's MANY hospital stays, including her Open Heart Surgery in Rochester, MN.  Funds also assist with travel expenses for Shaina's parents (hotel costs, food, time away from work)  so they are able to support Shaina during her times in the hospital.  The ultimate goal is for Shaina to receive a kidney/pancreas transplant and she still has a long way to go.   We do not know, at this point, how the most recent events will impact her journey to transplant as we know she will need to have stability in order to be considered.  We do, however, remain hopeful that a new kidney and pancreas will be part of her future.   Please see below for more information about Shaina's medical history.

Shaina has been living with chronic illnesses most of her life.  Shaina was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) at age 10, and Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) in her late 20's.  The CKD turned into end stage renal failure a short time later and Shaina began life on dialysis (3x/week) shortly after her 30th birthday.  Living life with renal failure over the past 6+ years has also had it's complications that affected others areas of Shaina's physical health.  Shaina has since had two heart attacks and stents have been placed to keep her arteries open.  A double bypass surgery took place at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN in June 2018.  Surgery was a success.  Shaina broke her tibia, fibia, and shattered her ankle in late August 2018.  Long term dialysis removes the needed calcium from Shaina's bones and causes them to become more brittle.  As the bones continued to heal, Shaina returned to Mayo Clinic to continue with appointments geared toward transplant approval.  While there, Shaina developed an infection in her dialysis access and was hospitalized for a week at St. Mary's hospital in Rochester and she could not attend the originally scheduled appointments.   Appointments for transplant approval were rescheduled to late October.

October 3, 2018:  Shaina's mom found Shaina at her apartment.  She was exhibiting seizure activity.  Shaina was taken to the ER in Valley City, ND, and later admitted to Sanford Hospital in Fargo.  Shaina was treated for diabetic keto acidosis (DKA) from high blood sugar level, lactic acidosis, high temperatures, high blood pressure, and seizures.  This all affected Shaina's metabolic system and became life threatening.  Shaina was in a medically induced coma for over a week while her medical team worked at controlling seizure activity. Shaina was in ICU for two weeks before being transferred to swing bed in Valley City for another two weeks.  While at swing bed, Shaina went into another episode of DKA which presented as stroke-like symptoms.  Shaina was transferred back to Sanford in Fargo and was stabilized within a few days.

February 3, 2019:  Shaina's dad found her at her apartment.  Shaina was mostly unresponsive.   Shaina had another episode of DKA that put her into a diabetic coma.  She was intubated at the ER in Valley City and transferred to Sanford in Fargo.  Shaina was again placed under heavy sedation due to ventilation.  Test results indicated another infection in her dialysis port.  This was the cause of her DKA.  After one week on the ventilator, doctors tried removing the breathing tube.  Shaina's airway closed and she was not able to breathe on her own.  She was re-intubated.  Another attempt to remove the breathing tube took place and Shaina's airway spasmed and was blocked a second time.  On February 22 Shaina had a tracheotomy and has breathing assistance from the ventilator through the trach.  In the early morning hours of February 25, Shaina's airway blocked again resulted in the need for CPR .  The trauma from CPR has caused bruising to the muscles in her chest and she is in a great deal of pain.  Tests were run to rule out seizure activity, blood clots, and damage to the heart.  We are happy to say that all of these test results showed no signs of clotting, no seizure activity.  She is currently doing breathing trials to strengthen her lungs in hopes the trach will be a short term solution.  She remains in ICU at Sanford, Fargo, and will stay there until she is more stable.  The plan for Shaina following ICU will be to move to the rehabilitation floor at Sanford so she can work on regaining her strength.  We expect this hospitalization will be  another several weeks, including the time in rehab.

March 5, 2019:  Shaina was able to "graduate" to her next step in the medical world. Yay! She was discharged from Sanford's Intermediate ICU and admitted to Vibra Rehab.  Vibra is located on 7th floor of the Sanford building. Shaina was anxious about the move as she has heard others had bad experiences at Vibra. We, as parents, were hopeful and so glad that we can have a rehab place that is right in Fargo and she can be there while she is on the vent.  Her first day there was a difficult one with many challenges.  The morning of March 6, Shaina had in incident of low blood sugar that occurred simultaneously with her trach getting plugged. The medical team kicked Lisa out of the room as they worked to get her trach opened and she went into a code blue for the second time since she entered the hospital on February 3. Fortunately, the team was able to get the trach cleared of the mucus blocking the airway and once Shaina started getting air, her pulse and heart beat were restored without the use of CPR or use of a crash cart. The low blood sugar was addressed as soon as they could. Shaina was back to baseline a short time later.

April 16, 2019:  Shaina was d/c from Vibra hospital and moved to Sheyenne Care Center in Valley City!  We are so happy she was able to leave the hospital.  Shaina will work on rehabilitation of her legs during her stay at SCC

April 19, 2019:  Another setback.  Sheyenne Care Center staff found Shaina unresponsive this morning.  Shaina's blood sugar dipped to 29, she was transferred to the ER and needed to be intubated before transferring to Fargo/Sanford as her airway was too narrow for her to get enough oxygen to wake up from that low blood sugar.  Doctor's discover that Shaina's trachea did not heal properly from the last placement.  Shaina needed another tracheotomy surgery.  She will be on a ventilator to let her lungs gain strength.  Doctor's report this trach will be placed for an extended period of time.   May 5:  Shaina is still on the ventilator but doing well with breathing trials.  She is feeling pretty defeated with this last hospitalization since she was only out for just over 2 days.  Shaina came off the ventilator on May 10 and was able to start eating a regular diet on 5/14!  She still has the trach with no time period indicated for removal.  Shaina's  mood greatly improved and she is finding strength from all of the prayers and support.  Thank you everyone!

May 30, 2019: Shaina moved to Sanford's rehab hospital on South University Avenue in Fargo.  She was there until 6/3/19 when she was transferred back to Sanford's intermediate intensive care to have her medication adjusted.  Today, 6/5/19, Shaina moved to the "old Sanford" on Broadway and she will remain at this hospital until she can go back to rehab (physical and occupational therapy) at the University hospital.  Shaina is anxious to get back to that hospital since she has started to regain some of the strength in her legs.  She is ready to take on that physical therapy challenge.

We are so thankful for all of the support Shaina and the family have received through the GoFundMe page, FB support page, personal messages, and local donations.  We are blessed beyond measure that God continues to answer our prayers and bring her through each crisis.  Our faith is strengthened and we feel the power of these prayers.  Thank you for reading Shaina's story and supporting her medical journey.  God Bless.
