Sgt. Gilberto Oliveira is a proud member of the 118th Trooper Recruit School of the Michigan State Police. He took an oath to serve and protect the citizens of this great state and we are all better off for it. During his 21 years with the MSP he has served at the Flint, Brighton, Metro North, and Jackson Posts. Sgt Oliveira and Cheryl, his wife of 20 years, are proud parents of two daughters and a son. They are also proud grandparents of two young grandsons.
Sgt. Oliveira (or “Tino” as many refer to him) was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma cancer back in July of this year. It is a cancer of the blood that manifests itself by attacking the bones. It causes lesions in his bones making them weak. It causes bone fractures, weakness, fatigue, and extreme pain. There is no cure for Multiple Myeloma. It is manageable with treatment, but it never goes away.
Unfortunately, the cancer damaged the vertebrae in his upper neck causing compression fractures. He is currently required to wear a brace to stabilize his neck. One of his doctors is hopeful that his neck will begin to heal with the current course of treatment being administered, otherwise he will have to have surgery.
He has completed a course of radiation therapy and is currently undergoing intense chemotherapy treatments and bone strengthening infusions. His doctor’s plan is to get the cancer cell count as low as possible with chemotherapy. Once he hits the right numbers, he will be hospitalized and undergo a stem cell transplant with the hope that the stem cells will cause new healthy bone marrow to grow. Hopefully, this will slow or stall the damage the cancer causes.
His life expectancy has been shortened by this disease - there is no changing that fact. The treatments and travel between three different facilities have caused a financial burden on the family. Anyone that knows him, knows he is not one to ask for help - he would much rather render help to others. That is where we come in. Now it is our turn to serve and protect him. We can help lessen the effects of this cancer by giving him and his family a little peace of mind with our donations. Please donate if you can (through this Go Fund Me or their Venmo @Gilberto-Oliveira-6), but please also share the crap out of this.
