Maya's Gap Year to Asia
Donation protected

In June I will be graduating from both Options High School and Whatcom Community College with my Associates Degree. I am excited about this achievement because at one point my family and I didn't even know if I would be able to graduate due to my chronic migraines. I've thought about going directly into college but since it will be my third year, I will need to declare a major and at 17, with very little life experience, I have no idea what I want to do. This led me to the idea of a gap year.
In August I'm going to go to Indonesia and then proceed to travel throughout Southern Asia - Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Myanmar, and India - by myself. I am excited to be traveling alone because it gives me the freedom and flexibility to make my own decisions about where I'm going and what I'm doing, and take care of myself at my own pace.
My intent for this experience is to give me an education about the world and myself, give me confidence in my independence, see the differences in spirtuality and culture, experience adventure, and to discover what my purpose is and what I should continue my studies in.
I have been very fortunate to have such a supportive community my entire life, and I will be forever grateful. Thank you all so much for the support, whether it has been in education, spiritual growth, friendships, or any other part of life. I couldn't have gotten this far without you. Knowing that you have been there for me, are here for me now, and will be here for me in the future means more to me than I could ever tell you.
