Short Summary
I am Shawn Connolly, co-founder of SF Skate Club, a youth skateboarding and arts organization since 2007. I enjoy sharing the art of skateboarding and believe that it is one of the few "sports" that teaches real patience and determination, allows for limitless growth, and nurtures individuality at the same time.
My campaign is to raise funds for SF Skate Club's after school program, EduSkate.
Your donation will go directly to providing a safe, nurturing environment supported by dedicated mentors and program leaders, Mon-Fri, for youth to do homework, engage in hands-on creative workshops, including photography, cooking, sewing, and zine making, and of course, pursue their love for skateboarding!
Here's the breakdown:
* We need to raise $20K, about a quarter of our yearly budget that funds a staff of 5 amazing youth development leaders, workshop supplies, food to fuel our youth, program insurance, and transportation costs.
* If we don't get to $20K, we will continue to make the most of what we have, making a little go a long way, always with the DIY spirit and creative hustle. Have you been to one of our art shows or street sales or bought popcorn from a youth entrepreneur in front of our skate shop? We love our community, and we're holding it down!
*EduSkate is fiscally sponsored by HealThier Foundations, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. All of your donations are 100% tax-deductible.
The Impact:
* We help youth channel their passion for skateboarding into academic success, self-confidence, and a willingness to try new things.
* Our program empowers youth to become invested stakeholders in their community. Even when they age out of the program, they return as volunteers and "Roll Models".
Risks & Challenges
Running an after school program in SF on Divisadero has its challenges:
*We work with youth and families struggling to claim a stake in an ever changing city landscape with surging rents and costs.
* As SF Skate Club has grown over the last decade, so has the need for our programming. We have built a reputation for providing compassionate and genuine support for youth in the Western Addition and SF and aim to sustain our services for the long run.
