SF MURAL SFC VANESSA GUILLEN

Hello , my name is Gloria Ortega for those of you who do not know me.  I had served the Army for 8 yrs. Like many other women, I was sexually harassed by the men who swore to train me and keep me safe. 

SPC Vanessa Guillen’s story has enabled many of us to finally share and release very heavy hidden traumas. 

I believe her tragedy has and will bring out a positive outcome. The discovery of an awful secret within Fort Hood and a movement has started. A movement that will change history forever. 

I lived on Army Street throughout my childhood. My favorite memories of are the walks into the Mission District with my mom and siblings. The smell of carne asada as we passed La Taqueria, the tease of pan dulce baking from La Victoria. If you are from the Bay Area ... you know EXACTLY what I am speaking of.  This neighborhood was surrounded with murals. Thosemurals empowered Latinos and made one PROUD! 

I am on uncharted territory with this but have decided that I HAVE to add more spirit to my favorite childhood community! 

Please help me to bring SPC Vanessa Guillen’s memory to the Mission District in San Francisco! 

A mural will be painted by the same artist who painted SPC GUILLENs mural at Killeen Texas. Cherine Munoz is the perfectLatina artist to bring to life SPC GUILLEN.

Paint supplies, ladders, food will be needed. I have the wall, the artist and now I need the financial assistance to move on this project. 

In time SPC Guillen’s story will start to fade. Lets make her spirit and her cry for JUSTICE stay in a community known for its diverse culture. A permanent reminder to our Latino communities triumphs. 

SPC Vanessa Guillen joined the Army to make an impact.... in death she has done more than she probably ever could have wished for!
