Welcome to my Sex Work in Civil War Washington and Beyond book Go Fund Me Campaign! This book will fill a glaring gap in the history of perspectives of Civil War Washington, that of the many sex workers who came, worked, and stayed in the city. Through the research I conducted for my walking tour, Madams of DC, I realized how little published information there is on this topic. These women (they were mostly women) made fortunes, paid taxes, gave to charity, owned property, and more importantly, they were people whose stories deserve to be told.
I give a walking tour on the topic, and in the process of researching the tour, saw a need for telling the story of the women who lived and worked in DC as sex workers. The funds will help with research travel, paying expenses, and allowing me to pay bills, since I will not be able to work full time if I want to have time to write the book.
I sincerely believe in the importance of this work, and I hope you'll support me in this endeavor. History is for everyone, including sex workers.
