Sewing machines for women in Ghana
Donation protected
I met Mr Iddris, fashion design professor at Elias Technical Institute, while sharing a meal of sardines and kenke in Ghana.
The institute is in the small town of Wa, one of the last before the Burkina Faso border and home to the oldest mosque in Africa. He explained to me that the school is teaching young and old women to sew and design fashion in order to be able to provide for their families and participate in the Ghanaian fashion and clothing industry.
In northern Ghana, many women are raised to be the head of their domestic household, not workers. But the reality is, women often find themselves widows or with sick husbands or parents and must become the breadwinner for their families. Without education or technical skills, however, these women are unable to find the jobs they need to support their families.
Elias Technical Institute is helping its students achieve financial independence by teaching them valuable design, sewing, knitting, patternmaking and marketing skills. Women empowerment. Unfortunately, the school is still using old manual Singer sewing machines from the 50's. These machines are inefficient and outdated, and unable to meet the requirements of modern couture. In addition, the Institute does not have any machines for embroidery, overlocking, or knitting. The Insitute has requested money from the government to fund the purchase of new industrial sewing machines but unfortunately, due to budget constraints, the government has been unable to help.
Mr Iddris and Mr Elias are great feminists and their girls are fighters. This is why I am asking you on their behalf to help them raise the necessary money for 40 sewing machines ($115 each), 2 knitting machines ($310 each), 2 overlockers ($270 each) and 1 embroidery machine ($670). Your contribution will enable hundreds of women and their families to create wealth and sustainable economic growth directly in their communities, for generations to come.
This is a cause close to my heart because of my fashion design background but mostly because I want to help my sisters.
Merci for your generosity !
Jade
NB: All proceeds raised through this campaign will go directly towards the purchase of new machines. I will circulate photos of the new machines to donors once they have been purchased.
