This organization helps disadvantaged women and children.
Pam Damour of “The Decorating Diva”, along with nationally known teachers, started “Sewing with a Mission”. This is a volunteer organization focused on improving the lives of disadvantaged women and children. The mission began in February 2018 teaching vocational sewing skills to people in Huánuco, Peru. Students included members of the community, a woman’s shelter and an orphanage who have had to experience terrible living situations in the past.
The mission group began by teaching as many necessary skills using sewing machines and materials donated for the school. As the word got out, classes grew from 10 to over 200 students, outgrowing the space provided. The increasing student load emphasizes a need for a permanent school. These women are in desperate need to have a safe means to support themselves and their children. 2019 saw the growth to a second city called Trujillo, whew another sewing school is being formed with on-going classes.
Currently efforts are being made to keep teachers on site year-round to develop a permanent sewing school. This will make it possible for more people in other locations to gain these useful trade skills. There is a plan to enter fair-trade agreements with other businesses once the organization becomes more established.
Sewing with a Mission is trying to create awareness for the situations these people are in and hopes to gain support in developing a permanent school.
