Support Young Ocean Scientists!
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Taylor Rock and I teach science at Thompson Middle School in Newport, Rhode Island and I am fundraising for seven of my students to be able to attend the 2024 Ocean Sciences Meeting in New Orleans. The Ocean Sciences Meeting (OSM) is the flagship conference for the ocean sciences and the larger ocean-connected community.
These powerful Newport students applied to present an academic poster at OSM and they were accepted!! The poster highlights the work done to build a miniboat, The TMS Sea Challenger, in collaboration with the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO) and Educational Passages. This group of young scientists also served as GSO Ambassadors at the 2023 Ocean Race Stopover hosted by Sail Newport in May of 2023. The TMS Sea Challenger was launched off of Florida in June, 2023 and sailed for over 80 days until it was pushed ashore in Nova Scotia by Hurricane Lee this past fall. Along the voyage the TMS Sea Challenger collected sea surface temperature data. Read more here !
Now in eight grade, the seven girls jumped at the chance to share this work with the broader ocean science community at this national conference.
All funds raised will be put towards flights and hotels for the conference. Thank you for thinking about supporting these young scientists from the City by the Sea in the Ocean State!
