Set is a valued member of the community, respected healthcare professional and beloved friend who consistently supports others. They tangibly make a meaningful difference in the lives of those around them. To Set, community care and support is not just words, but mutual, recriprocal and sustainable actions.

Right now, Set urgently needs our help to reduce their cancer risk.

Set lives with the BRCA2 genetic mutation. They recently discovered that this means they have a very high risk of developing breast and ovarian cancers. Their doctors have recommended extensive, preventative surgeries to prolong their life before they turn 45 years old - which is only 2 short years away.

They need to undergo a double mastectomy and removal their ovaries and fallopian tubes. They are a femme-presenting person, so they also are finding out more about reconstructive surgery post double mastectomy using their own tissues or implants.

These surgeries are also extensive, invasive and expensive and require significant time off and recovery. Set needs our support to cover expenses, but plan help for daily tasks while they heal.

Set lives with a disability and is their own sole income earner. Whilst the public health system may cover some procedures for Set, it's not yet clear what Set can access and unfortunately reconstruction after mastectomy is not available and requires high out-of-pocket costs.

Set is working with their healthcare providers to confirm costs & will communicate this transparently with donors and this page what they decide with their healthcare providers. Initial estimates are between $10,000 and $20,000 to help cost of living, recovery and surgery costs. These surgeries will give Set the best chance of living a long and healthy life for many more years to come.

With a mortgage they secured themselves independently, no family support, no intergenerational wealth and no significant savings, covering the costs of surgery and recovery by themselves is an overwhelming financial and logistical challenge.

That’s why this fundraiser has been set up. To make sure we help Set access the care they need to stay alive, without carrying the financial and logistical burden alone, in the same way they have support other community members and initiatives.

Every contribution, no matter what size, brings Set closer to recovery, safety, and peace of mind that they wont die prematurely of cancer or be further disabled by such a high genetic cancer risk.
