Seth Bogash, a young 26 year old Journeyman for Pipefitters Local 597 in Chicago, who grew up near the Coal City IL area and currently lives in Wilmington IL with his girlfriend Nicole and their 11 month old son Ryder. He is a foreman for his contractor and just started a new project downtown Chicago. On March 14th 2019, Seth and his family’s lives all came to a halt. He woke up and went to work no different than any other Thursday morning. On site they were to cut and modify some existing chilled water piping in an existing building, and also raise them to a higher elevation. The first few days had gone smoothly with no interruptions or concerns. But on that Thursday morning things went terribly wrong. Seth and his crew had successfully raised the first set of 10” Schedule 40 steel chilled water pipes to the new elevation. They moved on to some smaller tasks to regroup and get ready for the next set to be raised. They began to raise the next pair of 25 foot mains, when the hanger that held the pipes in the air above Seth, failed. In the blink of an eye, both pipes fell from the air on top of him. Roughly 2,000 lbs or 1 ton of steel pipe came down from above his head. With no time to react, Seth was struck by them. It is by far, one of a tradesmans worst nightmares. Miraculously he was still alive and missed death by fractions of an inch. Paramedics arrived on scene within minutes and rushed him to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in downtown Chicago. Unfortunately the injuries he had sustained were tremendous, which included stitches and scalp reconstruction to his face and head (where it is believed his safety hard hat liner had peeled his skin back when it was knocked off), 2 fractured teeth, 2 broken ribs, bruised lungs, 3 fractured vertebrae in his spine, a rupture in his small intestine (which they had to remove a portion of), and a pair of fractures to each side of his pelvis. He had to undergo a couple emergency surgeries to begin to repair what was so badly destroyed, immediately. He was held in the intensive care unit for the next few days and is currently in a regular hospital room with a very long road ahead of recovery. Once released from the hospital to go home, he will be confined to 100% bed rest for at least 6-8 weeks while his pelvis and vertebrae are able to begin to heal properly. Once that is finished he will begin the very painful process of learning how to walk again, as his lower body will have been not been used since the accident, and also his rehabilitation process of his entire body. Not only is this situation physically painful for him, it is also mentally, emotionally and financially going to take a tremendous toll on not just Seth but also Nicole and his family. Please help us reach our goal to make this journey a little less stressful and help ease the burden of worrying about how to keep a roof over their heads and food on their table. Seth is an amazing man that is honest, sincere, humble and has a determined work ethic that will help him get through this on the physical and mental side as well as an outstanding team of support and encouragement behind him. You can do this Seth!! We’ve got your back!
