THE PROBLEM:
What happens to children after they age out of the foster care system?
Within one year, 50% of teens who age out of the foster care system are living on the streets. There are over 63,000 homeless youths in Los Angeles alone.
These heartbreaking statistics prompted Diana Kramer, a Local 800 Art Directors Guild Member with twenty years experience, and I to take action and create SET FOR LIFE.
OUR SOLUTION:
SET FOR LIFE is a nonprofit, volunteer-only organization, partnering with group foster homes in L.A. County, Safe Place for Youth {SPY} in Venice, and the L.A. film community to create safe and comfortable homes for at-risk youths and foster teens who are aging out of care. Our mission is to help these young people transition by providing a stable foundation to build happy, successful lives as fulfilled members of the community.
SET FOR LIFE works in tandem with SPY and group homes within the L.A. County foster care system to find at-risk youths who have shown a firm desire to improve their lives, who demonstrate responsibility, and set goals for themselves. Since our inception in October 2016, SET FOR LIFE has fully furnished homes for eight young people and helped place two drug-addicted homeless youths into treatment facilities.
These incredible strides have been made possible by generous donations from production companies in the Los Angeles film community: Smuggler, Biscuit, Knucklehead, All Day Every Day, Hungryman, and more, have been graciously providing us with an abundance of beautiful, brand new furniture, linens, and other household items to furnish homes for our at-risk youth.
However, as a volunteer-only organization, we still have a lot of out-of-pocket expenses that are a huge barrier to helping more young people. Each individual home project costs upwards of $500 in moving expenses {truck rentals, gas, pantry items such as food, toilet paper and lightbulbs, etc.} and storage unit fees to house production company donations are $525 a month.
OUR GOAL:
SET FOR LIFE needs your help to continue changing the lives of homeless youths in Los Angeles. We hope to raise $10,000 to cover the storage unit, moving fees, and pantry items. Please give what you can; even a $5 donation will literally light up these young lives through the purchase of light bulbs!
