Jocelyn is a sweet and spunky 12 year old girl. She loves to sing, dance, and play outside. Jocelyn has Down Syndrome and Autism. She also has a chait cecostomy, requiring a surgical procedure every six months. Jocelyn's medical condition requires her to have her colon flushed daily, which is an hour long process.
Jocelyn has other issues resulting from her condition. If the doors and windows are not locked, she will try to leave our house to go outside to swing or play. When our family goes out in public, she has to ride in her wheelchair, or be sure to hold a hand the of an adult the entire time to prevent her from getting lost. She tries her hardest to runaway.
Having a cecostomy makes it too difficult for Jocelyn to attend public school. She also struggles with sleep and relaxation. It has been almost 11 years since she has slept through the night.
Jocelyn's entire medical team thinks a service dog would be a wonderful addition to her treatment. It would be tethered to her when we are out in public so that she cannot run away or get lost. The dog will be trained, upon command, to stop Jocelyn and hold steady to keep her safe. A service dog will also would know how to locate Jocelyn in the event she were to run away. The dog will be able to follow the trail to locate her. While Jocelyn is having her daily flush, the dog will stay with her and provide wonderful companionship.
We have been fortunate to find a reputable training company, Appalachian Dog Training, that is now training Jocelyn's dog. He is a beautiful Golden Retriever puppy named Zeus. We are looking forward to being be able to meet him in October. Acquiring a service animal is a significant expense. If you feel you can assist us with purchasing Jocelyn’s service dog, it will be sincerely appreciated.
