"Tech Sgt. Leonard Matlovich, a Vietnam War veteran with an exemplary service record, once said, 'When I was in the military, they gave me a medal for killing two men and a discharge for loving one,' after being discharged from the Air Force in 1975 for disclosing his homosexuality to his commanding officer.
Countless sacrifices have been made by honorable service members for our nation. Among these are the untold stories of brave LGBTQ service members during the 'don't ask, don't tell' era.
LGBTQ service members and veterans have faced unique challenges due to a history of anti-LGBTQ policies in the Armed Forces, dating back to the Revolutionary War. Nonetheless, LGBTQ Americans have earned Purple Hearts and Medals of Honor, serving with distinction amid the discrimination of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell.'
While many have overcome these challenges, few have received recognition for their service and achievements. Our film production seeks to highlight LGBTQ Veterans, showcasing their service through personal narratives, historical imagery, and factual accounts.
About Our Production:
Our veteran storytelling project's Part One began on June 1, 2021, in Washington DC, aligning with PRIDE month. The project has garnered two international film festival awards and an enthusiastic response from the military community willing to share their stories.
We seek your support to fund our Part Two production team and travel expenses as we travel across the United States to conduct interviews with military historians, veterans, active-duty service members, LGBTQ advocates, and veteran community leaders.
Your support is invited to help our team of veterans document the courageous stories of the LGBTQ veteran community.
