Help Mary Serve Sierra Leone's Most Vulnerable

My name is Mary Cho, and I am a missionary called to serve in Freetown, Sierra Leone — a place where individuals with disabilities and those battling drug addiction are often cast aside, labeled as cursed, and treated as if they hold no value.

At the government-run blind school, I teach and mentor students who long for dignity and opportunity in a society that too often overlooks them.

I also bring art and creative therapy to the City of Rest Rehabilitation Center, where many young and old Sierra Leoneans fight to break

free from kush addiction — a crisis affecting nearly 30% of the country’s population.

In my recent conversations, whether it was Amadu, the blind student teacher, asking if I would return to them, or the recovering addicts reminding me not to forget them, I felt a profound reminder of why this work matters: they need to know they are not forgotten, and that

someone believes in their worth and future.

This September marks my eighth mission term, but to return, I face a challenge. As a foreign missionary, I must pay my yearly rent upfront — about $7,000 USD (~$9,700 CAD) — a significant hurdle for someone living on a monthly, donor-supported budget.
