One year ago, while commuting from school to home on his motorcycle, Gabriel was hit by a distracted driver.
According to the police report, his body was dragged along with his motorcycle, missing a lamppost, a palm tree and finally hitting the curb. Although his head hit the pavement several times, Gabriel was fully conscious.
Once these long-lasting split seconds came to an end, Gabriel tried to get up, but as he saw his shredded pants drenched in blood, he was mentally preparing for what was to come.
The first words Gabriel heard from the surgeon after he came out of the operating room were “we had to amputate.”
If you were to ask Gabriel what his reaction was when he heard these words, he would skip the sobbing part and tell you that he knew everything was going to be all right because of the immediate and immense support he received from his family and friends. Everyone has been very impressed by his positive attitude toward his physical loss and recovery.
Unfortunately, at the time of the accident, the driver who was at fault was not insured, and Gabriel’s insurance had just expired a week before. Although he was able to receive some funding from government insurance, it was not enough to cover the multitude of expenses he incurred.
Therefore, we would like to help relieve Gabriel of the stress of paying for the high costs of his surgeries and prosthesis so that he is able to focus on healing and being back on his feet.
Any donations that exceed the amount Gabriel needs to cover his costs will be donated to a local non-profit organization benefiting amputees.
We appreciate your donation and we encourage you to refrain from texting and driving!
