Hi, my name is Ricardo and I am raising money for Sergio Chuc.
Sergio came to the United States at the age of 17 looking for job opportunities with hopes to support his family living on less than $1 a day in the country of Guatemala. He made his way as a minor all across Mexico and finally landed in Texas. A few months after being here, Sergio began to have symptoms of confusion and muscle pains that lead to a diagnosis of terminal brain cancer. With the help of some very generous people, we were able to get him on a plane back to Guatemala so he could spend his last remaining months close to his family.
Sergio is a Guatemalan kid from Coban, a town where the language spoken is the indigenous Q'eqchi' language, the only language he knows. Because of Sergio’s language barrier, lack of education and age it has been very hard to communicate to him what his health condition means for his life. We do not know how much time Sergio has left in this world but I had the blessing of meeting him in person two months ago. I took it as a personal mission to make that time that he has left on earth with his family a time worth living. I spoke with Sergio last week and he is not doing well, his main concern is not his life but leaving his family the responsibility of paying the debts he took to make his trip to America. It is a sad story with unfortunately no real chance of a happy ending. In my mind, Sergio sees himself leaving this world as a burden to his family, not having been able to accomplish his dream to give his loved ones a better life and leaving behind debts that will take his family years to repay. Crossing someone across the border costs about $16,000 and that is a debt his family will have to assume on top of possible retaliations against them because of the incapacity to pay. Sergio can no longer get up from his bed and has not called me once to ask me to save his life, he has only called to see if there is a way to help his family with the debts he is responsible for.
I urge you to please donate anything to help this family and give a kid who never did anything to deserve this the peace of leaving this earth knowing that he left his family in a better place.
