(update: june 16 2020 @ 7am my grandpa took his last breathe and is no longer with us.)
On March 15th, 2020 my family’s life took an extremely unexpected turn. My grandpa, Robert Chiaffino… known to everybody as Bobby Chiaffino, lost his balance & fell. We thought it was just a typical accident, until we noticed that he was having a difficult time picking up items as small as a pen with his right hand. Without hesitation, we took him to the hospital for what we thought was just going to be a routine check up. The doctors ran tests & things began to seem a bit odd when they ordered a Catscan & MRI. Once we obtained the results, we were left speechless as the doctors informed us that my grandpa needed emergency surgery due to an enormous tumor that was found in his brain. The doctors informed us that everything would be fine & all would return back to normal, when another unexpected event was discovered while he was having this procedure done. My grandpa was diagnosed with stage 4 Gliobastoma cancer in the brain. The most aggressive type of cancer got a hold of him. My family is devastated. He is home & since we do not know how much time we have with him, we are doing the best we can to enjoy him while we still have him. This has become a challenging & difficult time for my family & myself. We have tried to do the best we can to make him feel as comfortable as we possibly can but, it has not been easy. He is bed ridden, his whole right side of the body has gone limp, no movement or feeling at all. Being the strongest man I have ever known, it is difficult to see my mom struggle when helping him with the most minimal of daily basic needs. It is extremely sad to see him slowly fading away, right before our eyes. I am not used to & am having a difficult time coping with the changes happening right in front of my eyes. My grandpa means the world to not just me but my whole family. We have exhausted all medical resources to get a second, third, fourth opinion & additional treatments that can aide & assist his condition… there are no remedies. Everybody & anybody whom we have reached out to, gives us the same answer & without a glimmer of hope just tell us to “enjoy the time we have with him”. Having to hear this has crushed my grandpa’s spirits to the core. Sergeant Robert Chiaffino is a Vietnam Veteran who is very proud to have served his country. Anybody who knows him, knows that this great man has not only ever stopped loving his country but, has never hesitated to help those in need whether they are family or a stranger on the street. His life is being cut way too short. I am heartbroken even as I write this. Having to prepare for the worst has really taken a toll on our entire family. My family & I, would be extremely appreciative of any donation given. All proceeds are towards any additional medical costs, care, & funeral expenses. We thank you in advance & ask anybody reading this, to keep my grandpa & our family in their prayers. If you have any questions please contact his daughter Rossana Chiaffino
