Chantelle, 29, gave birth to beautiful Serena in August 2018. Just 8 weeks later Chantelle was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. Considering she had had many consultants, midwives and other health professionals dealing with her during her induction, labour and aftercare, not a single person picked up on the fact that having an inverted nipple may mean something more sinister.
Chantelle suffered several infections after having Serena, which lead to the GP sending her for a breast scan. However, the GP had also said that due to Chantelles age, it was highly unlikely that it would be cancer. Well, the GP couldn't have been more wrong!
Since being diagnosed, Chantelle has endured endless rounds of Chemotherapy, Radiotherapy and she has also has a single mastectomy. Things were looking hopeful, long term even I think the oncologist said.
In October 2019, Chantelle was told that the treatment she was receiving did not appear to be fully working due to more lumps appearing and a tumour growing in her arm. They offered another set of chemo which would either help or not.
Chantelle obviously started the next lot of chemo, still showing unbelievable bravery and getting on with her life as she would have done if she hadn't been handed these cards.
Throughout Chantelles treatment, she was hospitalised on numerous occasions due to infections, and new tumours and fluid retention.
In November 2019Chantelle was admitted to hospital where she spent 10 long days waiting on a CT scan, being told the chemo may not be working, being in unbearable pain and generally not having a clue what was going on. Chantelle had fluid build up in her lung which they managed to drain some away, to make her well enough to get home. However, everyone around her could see that she was deteriorating quite quickly.
Chantelle by this point had her parents staying with her, and having to take time out of work to care for her, her other family members were rallying around to care for Serena and offer support and as you can imagine their whole lives were being turned upside down.
On 29th December, I had a phone call to say that Chantelle had been taken to the hospital as she had deteriorated and was struggling to breathe. The hospital informed Chantelle and her family that there was nothing more they could do and they estimated 7 days. Chantelle opted to return home where she could be with Serena and her family and have her home comforts around her.
Within the last 7 days, chantelle deteriorated rapidly. Her arms and legs were swollen, her face was swollen, she had lost her appetite, she could barely walk and she had started to become more restless and not herself. She was having carers in numerous times a day as well as endless amounts of medication and pain relief.
Sadly, on 6th January, Chantelle decided it was time to leave her loved ones behind. Not only has she left behind her parents, brother and sister, and extended family, but she has left behind a gorgeous 17 month old little girl.
Please help us help Serena and Chantelles family in any way you can. No amount is too small. This is the last thing we can do for our Chantelle so let's make her proud!
