The abandoned and forgotten ponies In the Black Mountains of Bannau Brycheiniog, a group of dedicated volunteers is taking urgent action to address the health crisis facing the semi-feral Welsh ponies that have roamed these uplands for centuries. This campaign takes its name from an emaciated mare found wandering alone in the foothills, barely alive. Despite securing veterinary intervention, her treatable but long-neglected conditions had progressed too far. She was not an isolated case. Across the Black Mountains, herds have been declining in health for over a decade, numbers rising unchecked, foals and adults alike starving in plain sight. Without intervention, this will not slow down. Volunteers are already on the ground, monitoring herd condition and engaging with graziers, farmers, landowners, vets, Redwings, the British Horse Society and conservation bodies to build the coalition needed for coordinated management. Your donation is currently funding: • Feed on the ground: hay and salt licks delivered directly to the herds through the hardest months • Monitoring: regular presence on the hill to assess herd condition and welfare • Administration and legal costs: the groundwork to formally establish Seren Wen CIC, the guardianship body that will carry this work forward • Grant applications: securing the longer-term funding that will make sustainable herd management possible • Coordinated roundups and veterinary programmes: funds are being held in reserve for this, pending the formal permissions and partnerships currently being established.
