Last year my friends and family generously helped me to send my eldest daughter, Marguerite on exchange to France. It was one of those great life changing events. This year, I need to reach out again to send Seraphina on the Telopea Band Tour to the Battlefields of France, where they will premier a new composition commissioned by the school about the Indigenous diggers, and renew ties with the Pozières school. Seraphina is a violist - the only viola in the band. A natural musician, she is also band manager, so I really need to be able to sort this out for her. The trip departs 21 September and returns on 5th October 2017. It costs $6,000 and I have already paid the first thousand.
As my friends and family know, I am a sole parent raising three daughters on my own. Covering normal day-to-day costs has become impossible, let alone special activities like this. I have two jobs just to make basic things happen, but that is not enough and there is no time for a third job. It is sad and disappointing when my girls work hard and gather achievements along the way, and I cannot reward them. Single mothers like myself have a tough gig. We are generally cut off from capital and credit, we rarely own our own homes and most of our salary goes to a landlord. Like me, many have never been paid the child support ordered by courts and have been left with the responsibility and cost of raising our children, a job that we cherish despite its challenges. We are often victims of family violence, almost always victims of financial abuse. Our salaries tend to be stagnant, thus our superannuation is low. Yet, we are working harder than most because all the family responsibilities fall onto our shoulders. The up-side is that I get to do collective projects like this and change a child's life.
If those who we know and love put in the cost of the famous 'smashed avocado' breakfast for two, Seraphina can attend the Telopea French Band Tour in 2017, and carry out her role of Band Manager properly. She's creating a blog of the trip and everyone who donates to the cause can watch her progress and cheer her on her adventure.
