TLDR: This fundraiser will offset survival funds and the cost of housing in Portland during Seranine’s recovery from vaginoplasty. This will allow Sera to rest and recover a block away from the hospital immediately after discharge and between the first three follow up visits.

I’m Armand – Sera’s friend and soon-to-be caretaker. I’m assisting Seranine with managing this crowdfunding campaign to relieve some of the burden of managing day to day survival fund crowdfunding, medical matters, and ongoing legal battles with chronic fatigue and limited resources.

If you’ve been following Sera’s diary, you may be aware that she has been working towards vaginoplasty for a long time now. This fund is to cover food and housing costs for the duration of her surgery and recovery, offset her usual survival crowdfunding, and any incidentals that occur.

However, the short version is that Sera is a disabled intersex trans woman of color and CSA / rape survivor based in Seattle, WA who creates art through play, invites others to look into her life, and survives entirely on community-based support as she fights for access government resources that continue to be withheld despite obvious and well-documented need.

Fortunately, the cost of surgery is covered by Medicaid. However, the surgery will be performed in Portland, OR, a state away from where Sera lives. Medicaid additionally covers transportation, with an approvals process; but not housing, food, or care-giving cost associated with accessing and recovering from this surgery.

Costs pertaining to transportation to Portland as well as recovery supplies will be managed separately by Sera. An Amazon wish-list which includes Sera’s vaginoplasty recovery items is linked here and at the end.

I (Armand) will be caring for Sera at no cost through the entire surgery process (May 22 - July 12). I have already covered my personal transportation costs, which only leave big ticket items to crowdfund for in this campaign: food and housing.

For one month, Sera and I will be staying in an AirBnB within walking distance to the surgery site. This will allow us to walk to the hospital for each of three weekly follow-up appointments following discharge, without having to shuttle between Portland and Seatac immediately after surgery. It will also keep us close to the most ideal hospital for post-surgical care should any urgent or emergent care need arise. The AirBnB has a laundry room as well as a full kitchen, so we will be able to cook as long as I have energy to do so.

Our food and incidentals fund includes the cost of groceries for a month and factors in the possibility of ordering in if we are both exhausted. Recovery and care-giving will be intense, so a generous cushion is ideal. The fund also accounts for if we unexpectedly need to Uber to an appointment, order in recovery supplies, etc.

If you have excess cash, Sera encourages you to share, however please never hurt yourself by sending money to this campaign. Additionally, no amount is too small. Large donations, of course, are appreciated, but "small" donations are not insignificant. Sera's community support requests have often been filled by many people sending pocket change.

If everyone does a little, no one has to do a lot.
