Sensory garden for TJ

Hi,

My names Tasha, and im a mum to a very special boy called TJ. TJ is 13 years old and has a dual diagnosis of Down syndrome and Autism. Due to the nature of his disabilities, TJ is extremely sensory based. With this comes not liking textures of clothing on his skin so he likes to take clothes off, he also is still incontinent and therefore smears his faeces a lot. We find when TJ is in a nice sensory zone, these behaviours become less prominent. He also has mobility issues as he has hypotonia, hyper extension of the knees, hyper mobility and no toe heel gait. This means he can fall over a lot and his joints can pop out of place. Currently our garden is fenced with very cheap green wire mesh and really poor wooden posts, this means all the neighbours can see into the garden so therefore TJs dignity is not maintained. The flooring is currently slabs, and this can cause quite harmful injuries when he falls. Our wishes to make the garden great for TJs needs would be to have it fenced round with 6ft panels and gated more securely so he can't run the risk of escaping as he has no danger awareness. We also would like to level the garden out so its not on a slope, and remove the slabs and put grass down instead so its a softer landing should he fall. Then we would like sensory equipment if we raise enough to meet his sensory needs. The idea is a marquee type of covering so neighbours can't see into the garden from their bedroom windows to maintain his dignity but also it would be a great opportunity to have some sensory lights attached, and other equipment that would help calm him during his most difficult times of the day.
