After working 30 years plus for General Motors I retired and my wife and I opened a mortgage company. We had 2 branch offices and the company was doing great. We had a passion for helping people and were able to do so by financing and refinancing their homes. Our company was able to help hundreds of people and families secure financing for their homes. All of a sudden here comes the great Market Crash of 2008. We lost EVERYTHING!!!! Our home, cars, savings and businesses. We were Devastated to say the least! Had we knew that we were gonna go through this, I would still be working for General Motors. This was meant to be an easy living, fun loving, worry free life after GM. You think.....
After leaving the home we had lived in for 20 years plus, we were able to find a 2 bedroom 2 bathroom home. This was ok for a while but when you come from a 4 bedroom, 3 bathroom home it makes a big difference. Especially when you're trying to help take care of a 90 year old mother-n-law with dementia. Things get a little tight....
Now we are here in the middle of this Covid-19 pandemic and being evicted. We are not being evicted because we are behind on our rent. We have never been 30, 60 or 90 days late... it's because the landlord wants his property back. We received a 30 day notice to quit on October 12th which stated that we must vacate the property by November 5th. From the time we received it to the time that we were suppose to leave, did not allow us 30 days. We needed more time. Since we were not out by November 5th we were served Eviction papers. We were scheduled to appear in Zoom Court.
In Zoom Court we were given a court appointed lawyer who said he could maybe get us a little more time to move. He said we could probably get until December 4th to get our things out of the house. We let him know that we needed more time. We told him that we no longer needed his services and were going to represent ourselves.
An adjournment was scheduled and we spoke to the judge in defense of ourselves. We explained our situation and gave the judge a plea for more time. Expressing that we were senior citizens moving in the winter time in the middle of a pandemic. After it seemed like words had landed on deaf ears, the judge responded and gave us until December 31st to have all of our possessions out of the house.
We understand that their are certain moratoriums in place designed to help and aid people during this pandemic. Such as, the state of Michigan has a water moratorium, where they won't turn off your water if your bill is not paid due to sanitary conditions during this pandemic. There also is an eviction moratorium that protects renters who are behind on their rent which expires on the 31st of December, but has been extended to January 31st, 2021. Our situation does not fall under the moratorium because we are not behind on our rent payments. Our landlord wants his home back and we have until December 31st to vacate his property.
We both are senior citizens and are looking for a place to live. We need help with packing all the things in the house. My hand swold up so big I had to go to urgent care. Urgent care sent me to the hospital because my blood pressure was 220/116 and they kept me until the medication made it go down. I'm currently on antibiotics (12-5-20) and blood pressure meds. My wife has these shooting pains on the right side of her body from overworking herself. We both are just stressed out and tired. We could use more help in packing and moving things to the storages. We also need funds for moving trucks and a lot of things.
I have been qualified to purchase a home but we are in need of a hefty down payment in order for our monthly payment to be affordable since we are on a fixed income.
We thank you for listening to our story. May God bless and keep you and by all means, Stay Safe! Much love to you all, Lenny and Gwen Hemphill.
Millions of people are going to be evicted after the moratorium expires. People of all ages and of all walks of life. We just wanted to share our story to let you know that it could happen to anyone. It happened to us! We pray that we all will find shelter and safety in the mist of this pandemic. May God bless us all!!!!
