Senior Year Capstone Event
Donation protected
Hi everyone, my name is Jada Vaughan and I am a 4th year undergraduate student at the University of Southern California receiving my Bachelor of Fine Arts at the USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance.
Growing up in Brooklyn NY, there was always something going on outside on the block that I lived on, whether it was people throwing food on the grill, playing dominoes or spades, music bumping throughout the streets, and neighbors jumping double dutch.
In general my mom would find an excuse to go outside and cultivate a space for family and friends to come over and enjoy eachothers company and good food. There is always something to celebrate and what better way to do that than with the people you enjoy the most.
The anatomy of a block party is simple. Music, food, people, dance and the block itself. The block party was established by Black people as a means of subsistence. In a time when racism, materialism, and other factors attempted to tear us apart, it was simultaneously a source of joy and a means of fostering community. We become a part of that history as we work to unite our neighborhoods and organize them further.
For my Senior Project, I plan to throw a block party/BBQ for the community here. My environment, community, and village are all the reasons I plan on hosting this event. As I am transitioning out into the professional world I want to end my Kaufman journey with celebration, love and joy for all to be a part of.
All of the funds will be used towards the venue, food trucks, events, DJ and decorations which are all BLACK OWNED!!!!. Please consider to help in anyway that you can, any amount is appreciated.
Thank you all!
