My name is Vincenzo Torsiello, and I am a high school senior at BASIS Mesa. Each year, our school gives seniors the opportunity to conduct a research project in which they study and envelop themselves in something about which they are deeply passionate, and about which they would like to expand their knowledge. For me, this passion lies in music, and this thirst for knowledge lies in Spanish Flamenco.
From the age of two, I have been learning the complex rhythms and melodies of Flamenco from my mother. She first placed me into this electric and powerful world of poetry, grace, and strength by having me play the cajón and gain an understanding of what syncopation felt like before I even knew what it meant. Since then, I've been able to perform and immerse myself in the Flamenco scenes in central Arizona and also southern California, but I still have not experienced it in its native land: Spain.
In my Senior Project, I will be studying with one of the most phenomenal and respected Flamenco singers in the world, José Mendez, in Sevilla. Through being in a thriving locale of the art form and documenting my growth as a musician during that time, I will round off this very central piece of my upbringing in a suitably reverent way.
Donations to this fund will help pay for my flights, accommodations, food, and educational means.
Any amount, no matter how small, would be appreciated.
Thank you! :)
