Senior at Spelman Called to Greatness - Needs help

Hey Guys

My name is Danielle Pabon, I am an upcoming Black Women in Tech. I am a Senior at Spelman College, majoring in Computer Science. I have also received a web development certificate from Georgia Tech University while participating in a coding web development Bootcamp.  Currently, I work with Dr. Lycurgus Muldrow monitoring a scientific literacy for 10 plus HBCU’s campuses developing inputting content. This website contains over six hundred mini-courses and assessments, which incoming freshmen who wish to major in any of the sciences are required to take.  I was born in New York City in a lower-income community in the borough of Queens. I lived in Queens with my Grandmother, my mom, and my little sister in a 3-bedroom apartment while attending Forest Hill High School. I am 25 years old, as I stated previously, I am currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Science Computer Science Degree Program at Spelman College. My mother and my father are not college graduates and I receive little or no financial support from my parents while I am endeavoring to pursue my BS degree.

However, by the grace of God my uncle who I live with in Atlanta, and my grandmother who lives in New York still are my sole source of financial support. However, my grandmother is living on a fixed income and she has already contributed a one-time gift of $10,000.00 that she is still paying back.  The current annual tuition for Spelman College is approximately 44,000.00 dollars. Therefore the rest of my financial support is provided by my uncle, my grandmother, Federal grants, and loans. My Uncle had been a Math and Science teacher for 25 plus years. However, he got sick and had to get weekly dialysis treatments 3 times a week for 6 hours each of the 3 days during the week. While receiving these dialysis treatments my uncle was still working 50 hours a week therefore experiencing kidney failure. Recently I found my uncle passed out in his chair, and I had to call 911 and he was rushed to the hospital and he remained unconscious for 7 days and they thought that he wasn’t going to make it. After 7 days of being unconscious he woke up in an extremely weak condition, he couldn’t even speak or walk, and he started breathing on his own without the aid of a breathing machine.

My uncle had to go on a family medical leave to keep his job which was my only financial support for my tuition at Spelman. My uncle was in 3 different hospitals for approximately 3 months. My uncle and the people at his job thought it was best for him to take at least a year to recover. I really was happy that my uncle was focusing on his recovery because I was so scared that during his ordeal that he might die. I cried so much because I was not sure if he was going to make it, but God blessed us and he woke up. However, because my uncle handles the bulk of my financial support for school, I am concerned about being able to finish the last year of my computer science program. My uncle experienced Kidney failure and he had to go on disability, this caused a decrease in our income from 3,000.00 dollars to 1,000.00 dollars a month.  The decrease in income created a financial hardship for us, and I was forced to sit out of school for a semester. I was out of school in spring 2019, now I am back in school and then the virus came around which complicated our life even more. I live with my uncle and I am his main caregiver.

Furthermore, because my uncle is experiencing Kidney failure this pandemic virus is even more dangerous for him. He has depleted all of his savings just to keep me in school and to provide all of my living expenses. I am asking by the grace of God that someone will see my need and help me finish this last year at Spelman College (Spelman’s Annual tuition is $ 44,000.00). Although I will still be going to graduate school after I graduate from Spelman College.  Thank you for allowing me to share my need with you through this Go Fund Me digital platform.
