Senegal Bound!

Immense as it is diverse, no continent captures our imagination quite like Africa. Unfortunately, it is sometimes misunderstood (and often ignored) in Western society. As a result, we harbor what Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie calls the “single story” of Africa, classifying an entire continent of over 50 countries and thousands of ethnic groups as one, forming incomplete generalizations and stereotypes that can hinder our "possibility of...connection as human equals."
In the last week of January, 2020, nine members of my African literature course will travel to Senegal with me, an amazing opportunity that still today doesn't even feel real to many of us!
We can, of course, learn about Senegal in the classroom, but we know that actually being there and breathing in the culture can teach us something that we will never experience behind our desks, something that we will never glean from a book: connection and understanding between human beings.
We plan to interact with high school students in Senegal; visit historical sites, museums, and parks; and even engage in stereotype-busting activities like surfing while there.
The cost for each student is over $2500, and we have planned different fundraisers from recycling cans to serving a delicious pancake breakfast to help us get to Senegal. Any further financial assistance we could secure through Go Fund Me would be absolutely wonderful in helping us achieve this trip of a lifetime.
We will update our Go Fund Me page over the next few months, and we even hope to post updates from Senegal to keep all of our supporters informed about our trip, as we so greatly appreciate any and all help we might receive!!!
