SENEGAL AND BEYOND: RAW ACADEMY +
Donation protected
HII !!
I've been invited to study at the prestigious RAW Académie under legendary Tracey Rose in Dakar, Senegal for a little over 2 months starting at the end of March. I was notified just a few weeks ago that I had been accepted into the program which is exciting (!!!) but
RAW Académie can't sponsor my flight, lodging or supplies. (I KNOW)
I am turning to my lovely community and beyond for donations and shares !
I HAVE TO COVER ALL MY LIVING AND TRAVEL EXPENSES ! Luckily, Dakar is fairly affordable.
It means a lot to be invited to participate in this exchange of cultures and to be in Africa for the first time under these circumstances. This is huge for me. HUGE. I CANT DO THIS WITHOUT YOU.
ABOUT ME --
Jahmal B Golden
24 yrs
Jahmal is an artist/poet currently living in America. They spend most of their time pondering the pendulum that swings between 'nature' and 'grace' - measuring the predictable force that propels them back and forth in daily meditations.
~~~~~~~~~~
Black Trans Art and Thought matters. My practice as an artist is concerned with the fallibility of the “authentic” and reaches towards abstraction and away from representational work despite how inextricable the two are in my life. I've grown up writing in the tradition of poetry - reporting, documenting but always finding new shrouds to code my lived experiences with. Performance has given me modular outlet for conveying and abstracting my body and thoughts. I look forward to rekindling my relationship with the world renowned Tracey Rose and learning more about both of our practices while studying under her.
I've spent a lot of time considering what QPOCs have to do with their bodies and voices to feel at the minimum safe and understood -- no less to feel cared for, loved and empowered. I've seen social capital help QPOC achieve many a goal (with mixed feelings) - completing, fortifying and sustaining our aspirations and livelihoods.
The times call for people like me to make ourselves seen and heard. In this trans visibility resurgence I've felt my likeness and the bodies of my kin auctioned, exoticized, politicized, mamed and made plenty accessible to the lot of you (you, who are reading this post wondering what giving to me with do for you). As I mentioned before, my voice matters and my education matters. My/our future matters .
In some capacity, I am the future in formation. This opportunity is a step for me to build on what I've started and an opportunity to further shared with all of you. If you're wondering what you get out of sending me to Dakar for this prestigious fellowship -- it's the return, and what I bring back with me. It is my growth and watching my voice and craft grow louder and stronger .
