Journey to Become a Global Scholar
When I was five years old, my parents enrolled me at the Washington International School (WIS), in Washington, DC. WIS is an international curriculum and language program. Emphasis was placed on studying the people, heritage, values and languages of countries around the world. From day one, I was immersed in the Spanish language program. From math, science and social studies to language, literature and the arts, each subject was taught in Spanish. By the time I left WIS I was fluent in Spanish and on my way to becoming a global scholar! I was even inducted in the Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society - further demonstrating my dedication to learning!

The Numbers Don't Lie
According to the NAFSA: Association of International Educators, students from Maryland represented just 1.39% of the number of U.S. students studying abroad for credit during the 2012-2013 academic year. The data further shows that nationally, African American students represent 14.9% of the post-secondary enrollment but only 5.3% of the students abroad.
These numbers are abysmal, and not only do I want the opportunity to study and learn in countries near and far, I want to challenge my peers to "dare to become global scholars."
What You'll Be Supporting
I am applying to the “International Studies, Business and Culture” summer study abroad program in Barcelona, Spain. I want to be in an environment where I can further hone my Spanish-language skills and get an up close and personal cultural immersion. This program intrigued me because of the course offerings at the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona. I am minoring in business administration, so the courses on cross-cultural management, e-commerce, and international business and marketing strategies fit within my minor requirements.
Not Asking for a Hand-out, but a Leg-up
I work part time at a local retail outlet and have applied to a variety of scholarship opportunities to help fray the costs associated with me studying abroad--but I still need the support of each and every one of you! Every donation will be greatly appreciated, and in return I will not only share my experiences but plan to give back to my community by helping to educate others on the value of international study and global learning.

Thank you in advance for your support!
