Summit Public Schools 's mission is to prepare a diverse, heterogeneous population of students for college and career.

One of SPS's schools called Tahoma  serves a population of students in San Jose, California whose majority are students of color and qualify for free/reduced lunch.

Tahoma's teachers  do everything to not only academically prepare students for college, but also to encourage and nurture a college-going mindset in students who never thought college was a possibility for them.

Students like...

...Arianna who is hoping to become a doctor,
...Albin who has aspirations in medicine and public policy,
...Chris who wants to study architecture or
...Sarah who, through a wonderful summer camp called Girls Who Code, is now thinking about a future in computer science.

These are all students who would be the first in their family to go to college.

In fact, the majority of our students would be the first in their family to go to college. Many of our students have part-time jobs. Many of our students have family responsibilities that take up much of their time outside of school. In addition, they are charged with doing academically challenging work as well as preparing applications and writing essays.

Thus, it is disheartening and frustrating to see how much our students are asked to pay to just apply to college.

Applying to each UC campus is $70 .
Applying to each CSU campus is $55 .
Applying to a school that takes the Common App costs anywhere from $25 to $90 (not including schools with no application fee.)

A student with a well-balanced and healthy list of reach, target, and safety schools can rack up hundreds of dollars in application fees, not to mention registration fees for the SAT /ACT , fees to send these scores to colleges, and fees for AP  tests!

(Based on last year's experiences, we expect the CSUs and UCs to reject many requests for fee waivers due to the overwhelming demonstration of financial assistance of their applicants.)

Financial need should not be an obstacle to higher education. Your donation can change a student's life and the lives of their loved ones. Any amount is encouraged and much appreciated.

Thank you so very much!

Sincerely,
Summit Public Schools: Tahoma
