Melissa's Ecuadorian Mission Trip

Hello Everyone, My name is Melissa Forbes. I am a student at The George Washington University.  I along with other nursing and medical students will be going on a medical mission trip to Ecuador on March 12th-20th. The Global Initiatives trip is more of an immersion experience, where we do make our impact on the Ecuadorian community when working at the government ran clinic. The community clinic is setup to provide care to the under-served population and you will find that the purpose of us being there is to assist with providing care in urgent situations, assessing for anemia since this is a huge medical concern in children there, provide education to families and children regarding the appropriate diet to help prevent anemia, assist with Women's health screenings, and administer immunizations. We will also be visiting a local school that was created by a local ministry team. The team recognized that there were a lot of children hanging out at a small market with their parents who manage the produce stands and they were not in school getting an education. The ministry team opened up this school so that the local children have a place to go besides being outside in the heat and cold and provide them with the educational needs to help them grow their knowledge base. Since the children are from a lower social-economic community, they do not have the appropriate access to care; therefore, part of our mission is to provide assessments and screening measures to each of the children and give our recommendations to the director of the school.
