Send Maureen on A Semester At Sea

Donation protected
My name is Christina and I am raising funds to help Maureen to pursue her dream of going on a Semester at Sea.

Who? I met Maureen 5 years ago through my work with a grassroots organization in Kenya that works with orphans and vulnerable children in the Kibera slums.  Maureen came to the rescue center at age 14 and today is the eldest of the 20 children and youth that call the rescue center home.

Maureen is a poised and passionate young woman that has overcome significant hurdles in her life. She comes from one of the most renowned slums in the world where residents lack basic necessities and rates of violence (particularly against women) are soaring; she lost her single mother at age 6; and she has spent her adolescence growing up in an institution. Despite all of this – or perhaps as a result of it – she has found a way to persevere both academically and personally. Three years ago, Maureen was admitted to the United States International University in Nairobi, a terrific accomplishment considering that a mere 3% of all girls in Kenya make it to tertiary education. Studying international diplomacy, Maureen is the first among the rescue center children to attend university and serves as a strong, driven, female role model for all of the other children.

What? Semester At Sea is a study abroad experience like no other. Students travel to 11 countries across 4 continents while studying aboard a ship with faculty, staff, students and lifelong learners from across the globe. I sailed on Semester at Sea as a student in 2001 and as a staff member in 2015. It is an experience that forever changed my life (and I undoubtedly shared my love of the program with Maureen time and again over the past 5 years)!

Why?
Maureen has been awarded scholarship funding from Semester at Sea to join the Spring 2017 voyage, departing January 2017.  This covers 90%+ of tuition, room and board, airfare to/from the ship, health insurance and field courses. This is a fantastic accomplishment and opportunity. We now need to raise the remaining funds to cover some incidental expenses and independent travel that Maureen will need on her voyage.

But Really Why?..... Considering the ideals and goals of the Semester at Sea program, I am sure that Maureen would grow tremendously from the experience – growth that I am confident she will pay forward through her work in her home, her community and country. She is curious about the world around her and will be an asset to her peers and the shipboard community at large. Maureen can bring a unique perspective to the voyage and can expose her fellow student body to a culture and reality about the developing world that will help them think differently about themselves and the world around them. Semester at Sea is about experiencing different people, places and cultures – and having a student like Maureen on the voyage will no doubt help students to do that right on board the ship.

Why $5,000? We anticipate the following expenses for Maureen to travel.

Portion of tuition (not covered by scholarship): $2,000
Textbooks: $300
Laundry: $100
Port Service Fees: $100
Incidentals on board the ship: $250
Independent travel in country: $2,250
*Maureen is also conducting her own fundraiser in Kenya to contribute to this goal.

Your gift will forever change Maureen's life. It will also change the life of 20 other children at the rescue center who will learn that their dreams really can come true.

Thank you in advance for your support!
