Senderos de Mexico is a non profit organisation based in Mexico that began in 2014 by 3 friends who love hiking and helping rural communities. So they decided to promote their passion for hiking with a purpose to create, maintain and to protect trails.
The main aim at Senderos de Mexico is to preserve and to protect the environment in rural communities.
So what does Senderos de Mexico do in order to achieve their goal?
1. They work on exploring and coordinating new trails to create new maps so people are aware of where they can walk.
2. They also build new trails and maintain existing trails which involves creating signage to make people aware of trails/routes.
3. They work with rural and indigenous communities that own lands in Mexico by regular communication and getting them involved with the movement.
And how does hiking with a purpose protect the environment?
When signage is assigned to specific areas it prevents people from walking outside of the correct trail path. And as a result, endangered areas/sites that are around these areas are not trampled on which could damage the Eco-system.
Lastly, how does hiking with a purpose promote the development of communities?
Senderos de Mexico works together with communities from rural villages so they are able to learn why the organisation does this and the benefits of preserving nature. And because it is important to get them on board as they own the land. People in rural communities are taught how to maintain trails and how to become guides in those areas for hikers that want to hike in that area. And when hikers come into rural communities they often use their money on food and water which benefits the local economy in rural communities.
The organisation wants to counteract the effects of deforestation and the damage to the environment in endangered areas as a result of economic growth in Mexico.
So why does the organisation need donations?
The government has stopped funding the organisation as the financial and political situation in Mexico has become more problematic. Even though donations are now more important the organisation also wants people to not only donate but to be involved in other ways if possible by being involved in the exploration of trails.
How will the donation money be utilised?
- Creating and printing maps
- Material (plastic, wooden and metal) needed for signs
- Paint for signs
- Exploring trails
- Rural community education
- The maintenance of trails
- Organising events to educate people and for activity days.
