Hello Friends—
As many of you know, Wendy Ottinger is an amazing and dedicated teacher who constantly improves upon her practices. In her classroom she uses a method for teaching math called, "Teaching Through Problem Solving." This method uses mathematical problems or tasks that challenge students’ intellect and invite them to think about math content and processes in a variety of ways.
According to The Lesson Study Group at Mills College, as students build their mathematical knowledge through this method, they also:
· Learn to reason mathematically, using prior knowledge to build new ideas
· See the power of their explanations and careful written work to spark insights for themselves and classmates
· Expect mathematics to make sense
· Enjoy solving unfamiliar problems
· Experience mathematical discoveries that naturally deepen their perseverance
Recently, Wendy was granted the opportunity to participate in a 10-day professional development program with a focus on TTPS via the Project IMPULS-LSAlliance Lesson Study Immersion Program. The program invites a limited number of applicants each summer, and Wendy has been accepted as a part of this year’s cohort.
As many of you know, teaching is a job that requires constant growth, and this program will offer Wendy a unique opportunity to immerse herself in authentic mathematics TTPS Lesson Study in Japan. She is passionate about this method of teaching, and her students’ mathematical processes and understanding grow exponentially under her tutelage. She will return to school in the fall with improved upon methods, and will share this information with her colleagues.
In order to participate this summer, Wendy must pay for tuition, travel, shelter, food, and all other incidentals. So many of us have benefited from Wendy’s friendship, care, love of teaching, and passion for all students, and this is one way for us to show her our support. Please consider participating in this fundraiser and help send Wendy to Japan.
Thank you for your consideration,
