Help Potowmack Elementary School, Sterling, VA participate in a once-in-a-lifetime chance to meet and compete with Odyssey of the Mind teams from around the world.
Seven Potowmack Elementary students ranging in age from 4th - 5th grade will compete representing the state of Virginia among 30 countries in the 38th Annual World Odyssey of the Mind competition, May 24-27th, 2017 at Michigan State University . (https://www.odysseyofthemind.com/p/world-finals/ )
Odyssey of the Mind (OOTM) is an educational program that fosters creativity and problem-solving. OOTM is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their interpretation of literary classics. They then bring their solutions to competition on the local, state, and World level.
This team creatively solved the problem “Catch us if you can” by designing, building and running vehicles from a multi-level Parking Garage to a secret meeting place without being stopped. The vehicles traveled different routes to reach the same destination. During their Odyssey, the vehicles did something that prevented them from being followed. The performance included the reason for the meeting, someone that wants to prevent the meeting, a simulation of a scene taking place inside a vehicle as it travels, and a soundtrack to accompany the vehicles’ travel.
After winning First Place at our Regional competition, they traveled to Aldie, Virginia to come in First Place among the teams throughout the State, an honor great enough to propel our team further to compete in the World Competition in Michigan in May. Now they have a chance to go even further with your help.
Going to "Worlds" is full of unique experiences for the team like serving as ambassadors for a visiting team from other parts of the world, participating in a NASA-sponsored event and meeting and competing with students across the country with their stories to share.
That said, attending "Worlds" is quite costly. We would welcome any support you could offer us. The fee per person to attend is $700.00; that's $5,600.00 for the team and coach. Also, shipping the props and the vehicle costs around $1,700. We are negotiating the prices with the shipping company and sharing the transportation costs with other participants to save. Finally, there is a 30-year tradition at Worlds to trade state pins with teammates from around the world. While this isn't a necessary component, the bonding from participating in the pin trades is quite valuable. Apparently, it's a huge part of the competition culture. The cost of a complete set of pins for the team is $800.
You can see why we would appreciate any donation you could offer. We are very proud of our Team and all of the energy, spirit and hard work they've put into their well-deserved win.
