TLDR: We are a brand new Vancouver-based squash club with no UBC funding, and we need to raise $1000 per person to send 2–5 of our best athletes to the Canadian University Championships in Montréal (14–16 March 2025).
The backstory...
We are the UBC Squash Club, formed in 2024 by two UBC Graduate Students who were fed up of having no University squash community at the University of British Columbia, the 3rd largest University in Canada.
Since starting up in September 2024, we have had more interest than we'd ever expected, with over 55 members already, and more joining every month. We currently run 1 weekly drop in session on Sundays out of Vancouver Racquets Club (because UBC has no squash facilities... but that's a fundraising for another day!).
Our sessions are open to UBC students, staff, and faculty of ALL levels. We have over 10 brand new players, up to some players who have represented their countries! Although we currently only run these sessions on a recreational basis, we have big dreams of one day having an actual competitive squash club here at UBC.
This brings us to what we are asking for from you, the squash community of Vancouver (or elsewhere): We need to raise $1000 per person to send out best athletes to the Canadian University Championships in Montréal, 14-16th March.
Our minimum goal is $2000 so that we can pay for the flights and basic accommodation to send 2 players, but ideally we could raise $5000-$6000 so that we can send 4 or 5 players, pay for decent flights (not 2 stops and a red eye...), feed, clothe and house them well for the duration of the competition, so that they can actually be in with a chance of winning!
We would really appreciate anything you can give to help us fund this dream.
A breakdown of the costs we have calculated are as follows:
- Direct Flights: $700–900 pp
- Accommodation (2-3 nights): $200–400
- Food (3 days): $100-200
- UBC squash branded kit (required to compete):$30-150
- ESTIMATED TOTAL: $1000–1700
