Send three children to camp as their mom battles cancer.
We're raising money again this year to send three beautiful children to camp. Last year, with your help, we were able to send all three for a week, and this year we would love to send them for two weeks.
A little about the family - a few years ago, they came to New York from Sierra Leone with their mother, and now reside in a family shelter in New York City. All three children have hearts of gold. They love playing sports, dancing and singing, learning about science, geography, history, and math, and trying out new things.
However, they don't always get the opportunity to be "regular kids." They often don't have enough food to eat at home, and friends of the family regularly help provide groceries, clothing, school and household supplies, and activities for the kids to do in their down time. In addition to this, a medical issue with their mother has put additional pressure and hardship on the family. She was diagnosed with stomach cancer and will have to undergo chemo and potentially a massive surgery, so sending the kids to camp will also help give their mother time to recover.
With summer almost here, we're planning on getting the kids out of the challenging environment they live in - where they don't have enough food, where they worry about having their things stolen, and where they're not always safe - to a place where they can play and just be kids.
As many of you know, they get the experience of a lifetime at camp. They spend the session with counselors from all over the world. They get to partake in activities like drama classes, rock climbing, arts and crafts, music, and swimming. Every night they get to sit by a campfire with other campers, make s'mores and sing songs. They are surrounded by people that make them feel as loved and special as they are.
For the past two years the children have received supplemental scholarships from the camp to help with the cost of tuition. They were invited to attend again this year, with a similar discount, but we still have to raise the remaining $3,000 and additional $500 to cover camp supplies and travel costs. It is a lofty goal, that we hope we can meet with your help.
Two weeks might not seem like much, but it means the world to these kids, who have been looking forward to going back to camp all year. Thank you so much for your support!!
