My name is Silver Smith, and I am representing the first National History Day team in Aroostook County. History Day is a non-profit educational organization that reaches more than half a million with a science fair structure (but for history), and it was still the first time ever the County was competing! We paid for our trip to state out-of-pocket, pulled up to the competition next to full school busses, and felt way out of our league.
Then, on May 2nd with our scrappy set, tirelessly edited script, and hours of all-nighters rehearsing, we brought home gold from the state competition for our play on Stonewall history. (Here's what our day at UMaine was like !) The national event will be like this, but bigger.
After our surprising win, we have been cramming a year-long effort of
fundraising into a matter of several weeks. We’ve applied for
scholarships and written microgrants, called in favors, leaned heavily on the generosity of our excited aunts/uncles and grandparents. Now, we just have to raise money to fill the gap between those funding sources and our travel expenses.
While Maine has been active in History Day for 12 years, this is the first year Aroostook has sent a representative. With more financial support, we can advance to nationals in Washington, D.C., and represent Maine and Aroostook on the national stage. Consisting of students from Mars Hill to Caribou, our team is a diverse mix of enthusiastic teenagers embodying the best of the County.
Many people have already donated and if you are one of them please do not give again! Your donations are so appreciated and the whole theater crew thanks you.
