Send Team Japan to the World Cup

Team Japan is raising funds for our travel to the Roller Derby World Cup, July 3rd-6th. Our team is not only traveling from Japan, but from different places all around the world.

チームジャパンは、2025年7月3日から6日に行われるローラーダービーワールドカップのためにクラウドファンディング活動を始めさせていただきました。

このチームには、日本在住だけでなく、アメリカやオーストリアなど様々な世界に在住する選手がいます。

Personal Stories& Motivation

What inspired you to start playing roller derby?

I’ve played sports all my life but stopped towards the end of high school because of study and injury. After graduating, I had been needing something to fill the gap and direct my restlessness into. I saw a bit on TV about roller derby and instantly knew it was for me. Luckily for me derby was just starting here in Perth as I turned 18; I signed up, purchased my gear, and 15 years later I’m still rolling.

ローラーダービーを始めたきっかけは？

人生ずっとスポーツやってきたけど高校の終わりくらいに勉強とかケガでやめてしまって。卒業してからはなんか物足りなくて、落ち着かない気持ちをぶつけられるものを探してました。そしたらテレビでローラーダービーのことやってて、直感的に「これだ！」って思ったんです。ラッキーなことに、18歳になったタイミングでパースでもローラーダービーが始まったばっかりだったから、すぐにこのリーグに登録して、ギアを買って、その時から15年経った今でもまだずっと滑ってます！

What does representing Team Japan at the World Cup mean to you?

It’s hard to put into words. I think most mixed-race folk know the feeling of being ‘in-between’ or ‘not enough’ regarding their cultural identities. It’s hard to shake the imposter syndrome; especially because I don’t speak Japanese. On the other hand, while things have improved derby remains a very white sport, so to be able to represent my Japanese heritage and skate with people who share this part of my core identity will be something truly special. What a privilege.

日本代表としてワールドカップに出場することは、あなたにとってどんな意味がありましたか

言葉にするのって難しいなって思うんです。混血人である私たちのほとんどは文化的なアイデンティティについて『あっちでもなくこっちでもない、そのあいだ』とか『足りない』って感じてしまうんです。それはみんなそう思っていると思う。インポスター症候群を振り払うのも大変で、特に私みたいに日本語話せない人ほどそう感じるんです。でも一方で、ローラーダービーはまだまだ白人が多いスポーツだけど、だいぶ変わってきてるのも事実。そんな中で、私の日本人のルーツを代表して、同じアイデンティティの核を持って一緒に滑る仲間とスケートできるなんて、本当に特別なことなんです。こんなprivilege、とっても光栄に思います。

What challenges have you faced in your derby journey?

The ongoing challenge for my league (Perth Roller Derby in Western Australia) is our isolation. Our WFTDA charter A-team (West Coast Evils) is currently 4th in Oceania, and to have competitive games we must fly to the east coast of the country at least twice a year to play. The costs and time off work add up!

ダービーの旅でどんな困難に直面しましたか？

How is the team preparing for the World Cup?

This is an interesting and challenging work in progress, but one I’m excited to be a part of! Because we can’t all train together in the one place, we’re having to rely on gameplay footage, spreadsheets, and online chats to learn our comms, strategies, and each other’s gameplay styles.

これは面白くてやりがいのある進行中のプロジェクトですね、私もそのプロジェクトの一員として参加できることにワクワクしてます！全員が1つの場所で一緒にトレーニングすることができないので、ゲームプレイの映像やスプレッドシート、オンラインチャットを使って、コミュニケーションや戦略、お互いのゲームプレイスタイルを学んでいるところです。

What’s been the most exciting moment in training so far?

Getting added to the group chat when the team was announced was an unexpectedly emotional moment – it suddenly started to feel real. I’m very excited to meet my team in person come July!

チームが発表されたときにグループチャットに加えられたのは、思ってもなかった感動的な瞬間でした。 – 「本当に起きていることなんだ」って急に実感が湧きました。7月に直接チームに会えるのがとても楽しみです！

The Fundraising Connection

How will the funds raised help the team?

Anyone in derby knows the never-ending work that is fundraising. Every cent/yen helps in a sport that is volunteer-run and individually funded. On top of the usual home league memberships, training dues, sport insurance, replacement gear, and uniform costs, we now have to budget for flights, accommodation, meals, travel insurance, and new team uniforms. Any bit of financial help means a lot.

ダービーやってる人なら誰でも分かっていることなんですが、資金調達には終わりがないんです、常にしていなければならない仕事なのです。ボランティアで運営されてて、個人で資金出してるスポーツなので、1円でも1セントでも助かります。ローラーダービーの競技をするためのホームリーグの会費、練習費、スポーツ保険、ギアの交換、ユニフォーム代に加えて、今回のワールドカップにかかる飛行機代、宿泊費、食事代、旅行保険、新しいチームユニフォームの予算も考えなきゃいけない。ほんのちょっとの経済的サポートでもすっごく助かるんです。

What is your role on the team, and what do you love about it?

I’m a jammer. There’s just something about the chaos and physicality of jamming that resonates within me and gets me into my flow state. On track with the star on there’s no opportunity for my mind to wander – jamming demands you to be present; the chaos is mindfulness for my hyperactive brain.

私はジャマーをやっています。ジャムをしている時のあの混沌とフィジカルな感じが私の中に響いてきて、フロー状態に入るんです。ヘルメットにスターつけてトラックに立つと、他のことを考える隙は全くなく –ジャミングってその瞬間に全てを集中しないといけないのです。私のハイパーな脳には、そのカオスがマインドフルネスとなるのです。

What do you hope to achieve for Japanese roller derby by competing in the World Cup?

I hope our performance and successes will create an increased awareness and interest in the sport. There’s a lot of incredible skaters (ice and wheeled) in Japan, I hope we can raise derby’s profile and appeal and become a powerhouse in the derby world.

Today's skater highlight is Run. Run is another skater living in Tokyo helping to build Roller Derby here. 今日のスケーターハイライトはラン。ランもまた、東京でローラーダービーの発展に貢献しているスケーターだ。

通っていたローラーダンススタジオに貼っていた「ローラーダービー選手募集」のポスターでした。見た瞬間すぐに連絡し、練習に参加したのが全ての始まりでした。

How did you get started in roller derby?

It was a poster for “roller derby players wanted” that was posted at the roller dance studio I was attending. I contacted them as soon as I saw it and joined the practice, and that's how it all started.

日本代表としてワールドカップに出場することは、あなたにとってどんな意味がありますか？

↓

年齢や壁を理由に諦めるのではなく、いくつになっても人は輝くことが出来ると自分のプレーで証明したい。そして、好きなことを諦めずに愛し続けることで、人はどこまでと成長できると信じています。誰かの勇気や希望に繋がる存在になれたら嬉しいです。

What does representing Team Japan at the World Cup mean to you?

Instead of giving up because of age or barriers, I want to prove through my play that people can shine no matter how old they are. And I believe that by continuing to love what you love without giving up, you can grow no matter how far you go. I would be happy if I can be a source of courage and inspire someone else.

これまでのダービー活動でどんな困難がありましたか？

私はこれまで仕事と練習を両立させながらローラーダービーに取り組んできました。満員電車の中キャリーケースとヘルメットを持っての出勤は朝から筋トレのようです。施設を貸切での練習では、営業時間後だった為、茨城に住んでいた頃は終電に間に合うようにダッシュで帰る日も多くありました。また練習場所も限られていたりコロナ禍でコンタクトが出来ない期間があったことがきっかけでボクシングを始めたり、これらの経験があったからこそ、今ワールドカップに向けて活かされています。

What challenges have you faced in your derby journey? ↓.

I have been working on roller derby while balancing work and practice. Going to work with a carry-on case and helmet in a crowded train is like muscle training in the morning. When I was living in Ibaraki, there were many days when I had to dash home in time to catch the last train. Also, I started boxing because of the limited number of places to practice and the period when I could not make contact due to the Covid, and these experiences are now being utilized for the World Cup.

チームの認知度向上と応援体制を強化する為、オリジナルTシャツやグッズの制作を行っています。これらは、応援してくださる皆様にもご購入していただける様、販売を予定しています。チームのクラウドファンディングを実施し、SNSを通じて拡散することで、より多くの支援を募っています。

競技面としては、スクリメージ（練習試合）の映像を共有し、トレーニング内容や戦略、目標を共有することで、選手一人りとりの意識を高め、チーム全体の結束力を強化しています。

How is the team preparing for the World Cup?

We are producing original T-shirts and other merchandise to raise awareness of the team and strengthen our support system. These will be available for purchase by our supporters. We are conducting crowdfunding for the team and spreading the word through social networking sites to solicit more support.

In terms of competition, we share videos of scrimmages (practice games) and share training details, strategies, and goals to raise awareness of each player and strengthen the cohesiveness of the team as a whole.

How will the funds raised help the team?

We, Team Japan, have to bear all the expenses for the tournament such as airfare, accommodation, uniforms, activities, etc., which is a big financial burden. Your support will be a great help for us to compete in the world as a representative of Japan. We would appreciate your warm cooperation.

ローラーダービーは誰もが活躍出来るスポーツです。それぞれの強みを活かせるポジションがあり、体格やスキルの違いさえもチームの力になります。自分一人の力以上のものが戦略次第で発揮出来るのもこのスポーツの魅力です。ローラースケートや走ることが子供の頃から好きな私にとって、ローラーダービーは魅力だらけです！ポジションごとに違う楽しさがあり、どのポジションも挑戦する度新しい発見があると感じています。ワールドカップに向けて、もっとこのスポーツの奥深さを学び、楽しさを引き出していきたいです。

What makes roller derby such an exciting sport? ↓ ↓.

Roller derby is a sport where everyone can play an active role. There are positions where each person can take advantage of their strengths, and even differences in physique and skill can help the team. The appeal of this sport is that you can do more than you can alone, depending on your strategy. As someone who has loved roller skating and running since childhood, roller derby has a lot of appeal for me! Each position is different and fun, and I feel that I discover something new every time I try out for any position. I hope to learn more about the depth of this sport and bring out the fun in it as we prepare for the World Cup.

↓ 試合中の全体の状況を把握し、オフェンスやブロックの役割を瞬時に判断して柔軟に切り替える力を磨いています。特に相手にリードを取られた時には、素早いスターパスで自分のスピードとフィジカルを活かし、流れを変えられる動きを考えています。ワールドカップで、その力をチームの為に最大限に発揮したいです。　What’s a strategy or skill you’re working on mastering?

↓ I am trying to improve my ability to grasp the overall situation during a match, and to instantly judge the role of offense and blocking, and switch between them flexibly. Especially when the opponent takes the lead, I am thinking of moves that can turn the tide by using my speed and physicality with quick star passes. I hope to maximize this ability for the team at the World Cup.

What do you hope to bring to roller derby in Japan by participating in the World Cup?

Participating in the World Cup is not just an accomplishment for me, but a chance to breathe new life into roller derby in Japan. I hope to get more people interested in roller derby. I would be happy if I could convey the energy that goes into roller derby, and the appeal of a passionate sport in which players support each other in the intense clashes on the court.

What inspired you to start playing roller derby?

I always saw these people playing roller derby as strong and confident individuals and I wanted to be a part of it. The community and strength of my teammates and community members further made me feel like this was the place for me.

ローラーダービーをやっている人たちが強くて自信に満ち溢れているのを見て、自分もその逞しい人たちの一員になりたいといつも思っていました。

チームメイトやコミュニティメンバーの結束力と強さに、これこそ私の居場所だと感じさせてくれました。

What does representing Team Japan at the World Cup mean to you?

It means the world to me. I've never felt 'Japanese enough' growing up. I've finally found a home in combining my passion with my culture in a way I never thought I could. Knowing that I can make me and my family proud by representing Team Japan is a high I will never be able to describe.

日本代表としてワールドカップに出場することは、あなたにとってどんな意義や価値、目的などありますか？

私にとってローラーダービーは人生の全てです。(To me, roller derby is everything in life.) いままで日本人であるにも関わらず、『日本人として十分だ』と感じたことは一度もありませんでした。自分の情熱と自分の文化を融合させるという、思ってもみなかった方法で、ようやく居場所を築き上げることができました。チーム・ジャパンを代表することで自分や家族に誇りを持てるということが、言葉では言い表せないほどの喜びです。

What challenges have you faced in your derby journey?

I think I can speak for all when I say that COVID threw a wrench in my life. I didn't have roller derby for close to two years. I'm always curious about what kind of skater I would be now if I didn't have a forced 2 years taken off.

他の全ての人と同じ境遇かと思いますが、COVIDが僕の人生を大きく波乱をもたらしました。2年近くローラーダービーができませんでした。もし2年間の休養を余儀なくされなかったら、自分は今どんなスケーターになっていたのか気になります。

What makes roller derby such an exciting sport?

There's nothing quite like roller derby to make my brain shut off. It's all pure instinct that we've trained into our bodies. It's so hard hitting and fast moving. Sometimes there's a whole jam where I've all but blacked out what happened during, but I know I did something right and will feel a sense of accomplishment. Between the actual gameplay and camaraderie of both players, officials, and volunteers, there's such a large sense of community. We all put so much time and effort into it and we just want to see everyone rise into the best versions of themselves.

ローラーダービーが楽しいスポーツであると思う理由は？

ローラーダービーほど、頭をシャットダウンさせてくれるものがありません。それはすべて、私たちが体に鍛え上げた純粋な本能です。体と体が激しくぶつかり合い、敏捷に動く。時には、ジャムの最中に何が起こったのかわからなくなることもあるけれど、自分がやるべきことをしたのは分かっているし、達成感を感じることができる。自分のチームの選手と、そして対戦相手の選手、審判団やボランティアみんなの意識の間には、大きなコミュニティー意識があって、皆そこにたくさんの時間と労力を注ぎ込んでいます。自分達が最高の自分に昇り詰める姿を見たいからなのです。

What is your role on the team, and what do you love about it?

I would say I'm the comedian. I have a bad habit of making Muppet like noises when I mess up or almost fall when skating. Sometimes I'll just lay on the floor laughing. I always have a sassy or smart comment or joke even at the worst of times. I love making people smile and knowing I potentially improved their day warms me.

チームでのあなたの役割と、その魅力は？

僕はコメディアンかな。スケート中に失敗したり転びそうになったりすると、操り人形のような声を出すのが悪い癖なんです。時には床に突っ伏して笑うこともある。最悪なときでも、いつも生意気なコメントやジョークを言ってます。人を笑顔にするのが大好きだし、その人の一日が良くなる可能性があると思うと、心が温かくなるんです。

What do you hope to achieve for Japanese roller derby by competing in the World Cup?

There's so many assumptions of what Japanese people are like and how we're represented in media. It's primarily cute or pertaining to anime. I want the world to see that we're strong and a whole other side of what it means to be Japanese. I hope people remember us for who we are and that we are just as strong as individuals and as a team.

日本人とはどんな人なのか、メディアではかわいいとか、アニメとかたくさんの思い込まれているところがあります。私たち日本人はそんなKawaiiとかとはまったく別の側面を持っていることを世界に知ってほしい。そして、私たちは選手としてもチームとしても強いのだということを覚えて欲しい。

I wanted something I am really good at and searched on the internet and found Roller Derby.

→日本代表になることが夢でした。とても誇りに思います！

Being a player for the Team Japan was one of my dreams. I'm so proud.

これまでのダービー活動でどんな困難がありまひたか？

→日本ではマイナースポーツのローラーダービー。人がいない、試合ができない、コーチがいない、練習場がない、雨でキャンセルになる、備品が買えない、誰も知らない、活動全てにお金がかかる。日本でダービーをすることは困難しかありません笑

Roller derby is a minor sport in Japan. No people, no games, no coaches, no practice fields, cancellations due to rain, no equipment to buy, no one knows anyone, and all activities cost money. There is nothing but difficulties to play derby in Japan lol.

チームはワールドカップに向けてどのように準備していますか？

→合言葉を使った作戦の練習。

Practice of strategy using secret words.

基本はどのようにトレーニングを行っていますか？

→週2日各2時間、基礎練習や試合形式の練習。

Two hours each two days a week for basic and gameplay practice.

これまでのトレーニングで最も印象に残っている瞬間は？

→これまで作戦を使った練習をしたことがなかったので、チームジャパンとして作戦練習ができたことが嬉しかった。

We had never practiced using strategy before, so I was happy that we were able to practice strategy as Team Japan.

ローラーダービーが楽しいスポーツであると思う理由は？

→激しいコンタクトがあること。性別の制限がないこと。試合後に相手チームのMVPを決め称え合うこと。

Have intense contact. No gender restrictions. We get the MVP from each team after the game.

チームでのあなたの役割と、その魅力は？

→ムードメーカーを目指します。自分もチームメイトにもできるだけ笑ってもらえるよう努めます！

I aim to be a mood maker. I will try to make myself and my teammates laugh as much as possible!

→ペナルティリスクを減らす。疲れた時の声かけ。

Reducing penalty risk. Speak up especially when teammates are tired.
