Hi, my name is Sydney Arnold
This September, I was given the opportunity to take a gap year in Israel through the Young Judea year course. I know this program will be a very life changing experience in which I will not only discover more about Israel but also have the chance to learn more about myself.
Our family has faced many intense challenges over the years. My entire life I have not seen my father other than therapeutic supervised visitations once a month because he abused me as a child.
Throughout my senior year in high school, my father promised he would pay for my college- so that became my plan. With all the time, energy and pain I have wasted on believing there was a hope for a healthy connection with him, I trusted him to take care of my college education. This hope only resulted in me realizing his promise was not sincere and in fact was just another way he planned to attach strings onto me.
I no longer need to or want to hang onto those strings, as it is my time to fly.
In December of last year, I was granted the chance to visit Israel with an exchange program and it was sincerely the best week of my life. I felt such a strong connection with the people, culture and heritage there, and I have dreamt of going back ever since to the place I can truly move forward and begin my journey into a positive future.
I was blessed to find the Young Judea program, and knew immediately it was the perfect path for me. I have been considering joining the IDF and making Aliyah. Spending a year in Israel will help guide me in making the choice that is best for me. After taking tests and scoring perfect on the Hebrew language requirements, I have been accepted to participate with MDA (Magen David Adom)- Israel's Emergency First Aid / Ambulance service. Another reason this program is ideal is because it offers college credits to excel in my future education.
My family and I have been exploring as many options as possible to contribute to my goal and with the help of scholarships half of the program cost is already covered. I have been working as much as I can to support my dream as well. With all my effort, the program is still very expensive, so I hope you can feel my sincere appreciation for every and any donation.
