Send Student Arts Advocates to Washington, D.C.

Want to join me in making a difference in students' lives and our national policy towards public funding for the Arts? I'm raising money to benefit Missouri Alliance for Arts Education's National Student Arts Advocate program. Any donation will help make an impact. Thanks in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to me.

MAAE brings together the major student and teacher organizations in all Arts Education disciplines in Missouri to support efforts to guarantee that all children in the state receive a rich arts experience while they are in school.

One of our most exciting programs over the last 6 years has been Show-Me Arts and the National Student Arts Advocate.  High school arts (art, dance, music and theatre) students are invited each year to participate in the Show-Me Arts Summit which provides advocacy training in our state capitol, Jefferson City.  Guest speakers notivate the students and take them through activities and role-playing to prepare them for a visit to the State Capitol the next day as part of Fine Arts Education Day.

Each year MAAE selects one or more of these students to serve as our National Student Arts Advocate. That young person receives an all-expense-paid trip to the National Arts Action Summit sponsored by Americans for the Arts.  While there they tour Washington, receive further advocacy training on national arts issues, attend a lecture and performance at the Kennedy Center, and then visit Capitol Hill where they meet with staff, representatives, and senators to tell the story of how Arts Education has changed their lives and to advocate for continuing the Federal programs that support it.

Many of these students have never been to our nation's capital.  The experience is life-changing for them.  But just as important, their presence has actually been effective in garnering increased support for Arts Education from our Representatives and Senators.

Unfortunately, the grant programs that have allowed MAAE to provide these programs in the past have been reduced.  As a result, we ask you to join us in making this amazing opportunity continue for Missouri Arts students.  One student trip costs about $1,200.  If we exceed our goal above, we will be happy to offer the opportunity to more than one deserving young person.  Wouldn't it be wonderful to have a youth representative from each of Missouri's congressional districts?

Please join me in supporting these wonderful students and this worthwhile program.
