As an alumna of St. John's College, I know first-hand how the school can change lives. I was so excited (and a little jealous for my high school self) to hear that the school opened a Summer Academy for high school students to experience a taste of the Program. And I was over the moon when I found out that Sam, one of my students, has the opportunity to go.

Sam is a rising senior at Washington Leadership Academy, an open-enrollment Title I charter school in Washington, DC. He is incredibly bright and really excited to have a chance to attend SJC Summer Academy. He is a uniquely diplomatic and rational thinker,  who tries to see all sides of a problem. He throws himself into every class and rises to every intellectual challenge thrown at him. Unfortunately, Sam's family cannot afford the summer tuition, and our school counselor was let go without warning right before he could submit his application for the scholarship. Sam's file wasn't taken over by someone else, and he wasn't able to apply for the scholarship by the deadline. 

Sam frequently stopped me in the hall during the spring to ask about my experience at SJC and expressed his excitement. He is exactly the kind of student who would relish a St. John's class discussion, and exactly the type of student who deserves to be there. He should not miss this opportunity because the adults he entrusted with his application fell through. His family was counting on the full scholarship to allow him to go for the second session: "Freedom and Order: Creating Laws, Government, and Society". He needs a $200 deposit by Friday, June 7 to secure his spot, and an additional $1,100 to cover room, board, and tuition. Please help open St. John's doors for a student who SHOULD be able to learn there!
