Redwood Heights Elementary School is a Title I School located in the heart of Oakland, CA. For many years, we have been raising funds to send our 4th grade classes to a program called Nature Bridge located in the Marin Headlands. It is a two day overnight experience that our students look forward to throughout their elementary years.
Nature Bridge offers students the opportunity to engage in inclusive, hands-on learning experiences in one of the San Francisco Bay Area’s most pristine coastal locations. Students explore Rodeo Beach and the trails of the Marin Headlands, challenge themselves physically, build meaningful relationships, and discover a caring relationship with the natural world. This trip is a highlight of their school experience and creates memories that last a lifetime.
Unfortunately, due to OUSD budget cuts, our PTA—who normally contributes a significant portion of the cost—can only contribute a small amount this year. As a Title I school, many of our families do not have the means to pay for the trip on their own. Donations will cover the cost for students and chaperones to attend the program, plus transportation to and from the Marin Headlands, ensuring every child can participate regardless of family income.
As a member of the PTA and a parent of two students who are a part of the Redwood Heights community, I can say without hesitation how special our school is. Our PTA and families work tirelessly to raise funds to ensure that our students have access to many of the opportunities and experiences that are being removed from public education every day due to budget cuts. The Nature Bridge experience is just one of the ways that we expand those experiences to students who may not have the resources to do so.
