Hi, my name is Django. I was shocked to learn recently that my friend Kimira V Leonard was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS), a chronic neurological condition that makes the body attack itself.
The symptoms and severity of MS can vary from person to person, but severe cases can lead to a patient to be unable to walk without the support of an assistive device. Worst cases lead to patients being unable to walk at all.
I've been friends with Kimira and her husband Daniel for nearly 15 years. I used to play in bands with Daniel, and shared many wonderful memories hanging out with him and Kimira in Omaha's Benson neighborhood – and I've always known them to be the best kind of people. It's crushing to hear of V's diagnosis.
HERE'S THE ASK
V and Daniel are at the dentist this week, taking care of the infections. Once that work is complete ($1,500+), they'll already be wiped out, financially. The cost of long-term MS treatment for a couple from such modest means as V and Daniel is simply unrealistic. However, V happens to be from Prague in the Czech Republic, where they have a universal healthcare system.
I'm asking for contributions to help V and Daniel to move back to Prague, where V can get the treatment she needs.
I've gotta be honest. I don't know exactly how much it will cost to make that happen. There are things they need to do with visas and paying off debts before they can leave (not to mention flights), so I just put up a round $5,000 number to get things started.
I know V and Daniel haven't been running around with a wealthy circle of friends, but I also know how much a series of $10 donations will add up and mean to them.
These are kind and true people who do not deserve to have this medical and financial burden be part of their life experience. Please help.
