Send Jasleen to Jr Pan Am Games

Donation protected
Hello! My name is Jasleen Kaur and I am a local badminton athlete of Viking, Alberta (population: 1,000), a small town located 1 hour southeast of Edmonton. As per my results in the 2018 Junior Canadian National Championships this May, where I won a bronze medal in U17 Girls Singles, and a Sportsmanship and Fair Play Award,  I have been selected by Badminton Canada to represent the country at the 2018 Junior Pan American Games held in Brazil from July 15 to July 27. By competing in this event, I will have the honor of being part of Canada's Junior National Badminton Team, which consists of only the elite players of the country. Only the members of this team can compete in the 2018 World Junior Championships, held in Markham, Ontario this November.

My Story

I have been playing badminton for 10 years, and have overcome many hurdles most people would have never thought to. My father and coach taught me the sport when I was 6 years old in a small town named Galahad, also close to Edmonton. We trained whenever we could, from transforming our family restaurant into a miniature court to eventually being able to play in the school gym of Forestburg (a village). When my family moved to Edmonton, my father put all of his effort into finding a gym so we could practice, ranging from community centers with hard rubber floors to half a court with basketballs constantly bouncing in. When no court was available, we even set up a fake net in a squash court! In 2012, we moved to Viking, where my parents now run a motel. Now, we travel 20 km to another village named Kinsella and train in their community center. I train 4 hours a day, 6 days a week just so that I can perform my absolute best at tournaments.

All of my father’s hard work to train me has been paying off, as I am now a 12-time Alberta Provincial Champion, earning a Triple Crown 3 times at the provincial championships as well. A Triple Crown means winning all three events: singles, doubles and mixed doubles. I am also the 2015 Junior National Bronze Medalist in U15 Girls Doubles, and now recently, the Junior Nationals Bronze Medalist in U17 Girls Singles. I have also represented Canada at the 2012 Junior Pan American Games, as well as the 2015 and 2018 Canada Junior International. I was part of Team Alberta during the 2015, 2016, and 2018 Canadian Western Team Championships, where we won gold, silver then gold again respectively. My accomplishments in Senior badminton include being in top 4 Albertan female athletes.

I have also contributed to the Viking School Badminton Team for the last 5 years, winning gold in every tournament and earning the Most Valuable Player Award multiple times. I am the 2017 (Grade 10) and 2018 (Grade 11) High School Girls Singles Provincial Champion

Along with badminton, my academic achievements as a sophomore student at Viking High School include several Honors Rolls in all disciplines. My current average is 94.2% and I plan to pursue a career in accounting when I graduate from high school.

The Costs

The trip to Brazil will be $7000.

Entry Fee - Badminton Canada charges this = $1500

Plane Tickets - 2 (one for me and my coach/dad, since I’m a minor) x $1500 = $3000

Accomodation - 11 nights x $31.82 per night = $350

Travelling Costs - immunization: $800, visa fees: $100, baggage fees: $50 = $950

Food/ Transportation - around $100 a day x 12 days = $1200

My family has been supporting me for the last 10 years, but now the costs are going up because of the international tournaments. We have never asked for financial support until now. Every dollar received will be greatly appreciated and put forth to help cover the cost of this trip, and hopefully many more to come!
